Chapter 8
Day Mode

Korina looked at herself in the mirror. Months of hard work and preparation, had finally come to fruition. After her first outing, there had been some time until the ball. She continued to work with the Baroness and each day felt long and slow with anticipation. Yet suddenly here she was, all dressed up and ready, at least as ready as she was going to be.

It felt strange not having the Baroness here to critique her. She'd been over earlier this morning and had brought Korinas' dress. It was the biggest dress Korina had ever seen and there was so much lace. She had no idea how anyone got around in such a thing but now understood why the doorways needed to be so wide.

It took a bit of maneuvering getting it on and then walking around in it. She'd only been able to wear it for an hour or so. The Baroness had her do a quick run through of everything she might do at the Debutante Ball and then they shared several dances.

When the Baroness was satisfied Korina wouldn't make a fool of herself, she had her take the dress off. The Baroness then spent some time with the staff, letting them know how she wanted Korina to be prepared. Korina wondered why she wasn't going to be here to help and learned the Baroness also needed to prepare herself for the ball. Apparently it was quite the event for everyone in Crestmoore.

After the Baroness left, Korina had been allowed to relax until it was time to get ready. She tried to but found it hard to stay still. She busied herself with another letter to her father and playing the piano.

When it was time Betsy and the staff helped her get ready. She could hardly recognize herself when they were finished. While it was their job to serve her family, she couldn't thank them enough. She knew they had all put a lot of effort, into making her look her best. Everyone had worked so hard to get her to this point. She let out a sigh, looking into the mirror thinking, it was up to her now.

It was strange to think, today was the day, she might meet her husband. She'd almost forgotten again that this was what everything had been for. She clutched her chest, wondering what he might be like. She tried to imagine him and her thoughts drifted to a certain someone...

"Oh my," said a voice, drawing Korina from her thoughts.

She turned to see her grandmother standing in the doorway of her dressing room. Her face lit up when she saw Korina in her dress. After a moment she looked looked tearful. Korina quickly gathered up her dress and went to her grandmother. "Are you okay?"

"Yes, yes," said her grandmother, waving Korina off. "You just...You look so perfect."

Korina smiled and quickly said "Thank, but really it was Betsy and the rest of the staff. They did everything"

"You...You're so sweet, just like your mother," Her grandmother said. Her eyes went distant for a moment as she became lost in thought. She grasped hold of her necklace and rubbed it.

Korina wondered if her grandmother really was okay. She had the saddest look in her eyes. "Grandmother,"

"Mmm," said her grandmother, coming out of her thoughts. She let go of her necklace realizing she'd slipped away for a moment, "Oh, I'm sorry… forgive me," she said looking Korina up and down once again, "Look at you. You've worked so hard I...I know…I know I haven't made things easy on you and I haven't been the best of company these last few months….It's been a while since I've had another in my life..."

"It's okay," assured Korina. "The fact that I have met you and can know you is enough," She grasped her grandmothers hands. Rules or no rules she seemed to need comfort.

Her grandmother smiled and squeezed her hands back, "Yes, well perhaps after the ball if you're not too busy we could spend some time together,"

"I would love that very much," said Korina.

There was a knock at the door and they tuned to see, Hazley. He bowed to them and Korinas' grandmother acknowledged him. "Yes,"

"The Cordays' have arrived," said Hazley.

"Thank you. We will be done soon," said Korinas' grandmother.

Hazley nodded and then left. They both looked at each other, once more and again her grandmother smiled, "Well then...shall we."

Korina nodded and took up her dress, together they made their way to the stairs. Korina realized she couldn't see her feet and became nervous. The last thing she needed right now was to fall and break her neck. Her grandmother seemed to pick up on her concern and suggested. "Hold on tightly to the banister and take small, slow steps. At least that was how I used to do it."

Korina smiled and said, "Thank you," She watched her grandmother descend the stairs and then grabbed onto the railing. She did her best to take things slow and steady, slow and steady.

***

Velona was fixing the sleeves of his dress, when Korina and the Countess came downstairs. He wasn't expecting much, he'd already seen Korina in her dress this morning. He'd designed and paid for it himself and it suited her well as he knew it would. He hoped it would help her to stand out but doubted it.

Most the girls went overboard with their dresses, trying to attract attention. He'd gone for a more classical look. A large white hoop gown that made her look as if she were a blushing bride. It was reminder to those who took an interest, at what possibilities could be.

The Countess reached the bottom of the stairs and Velona looked up from his sleeves. He curtsied to her and then looked to the staircase. He froze when he saw Korina slowly descending. There were probably a few things wrong but in that moment he could not grasp hold of a single one. His breath caught in his chest and he found he could not look away from her.

Korina got to the bottom of the stairs and let out a sigh of relief before she curtsied to Beckett and then him. When she rose up, she smiled at him and asked,"How do I look?"

Velona parted his mouth and then closed it as he found himself utterly speechless...

Thankfully Beckett stepped in, "You look splendid. I am sure you'll catch many an eye tonight."

Korina smiled at Beckett and her grandmother said,"Let us hope so."

Velona looked away from Korina and turned around. It took him a moment but he collected himself."Let us go now. We don't want to be late,"

"Oh yes," said the Countess "We mustn't be late, today of all days"

They moved into the entry hall and as they were collecting their cloaks, Korina spoke,"I ah...I do wonder,"she said hesitantly. Velona swallowed and dared to turn and look at her again as she continued, "Will I be able to fit in the carriage with everyone? I mean this is a rather large dress."

Velona stared at her, gloriously unimpressed once again. For a moment all dressed up she had been... something but was still as dimwitted and lowly as ever. He smiled relieved and then elated. He was really getting good at this. All his training, all his hard work and even he'd been caught off guard for a second.

"Do not trouble yourself." said Velona after a moment."These traditions have been going on for hundreds of years. If anything the dresses have only gotten bigger. We know what to do."

"Yes," said the Countess with a small chuckle.

Korina nodded but still seemed hesitant. The things she chose to concern herself with. He looked her up and down once again and wondered for a moment, what went on in that little head of hers. It must be nice to have such trivial concerns. Velona turned back around and pitied the man that fell for her. It was almost unfair with all the work he'd put into her, they had no idea what they were getting into.

***

Korina let out a heavy sigh as they stepped outside. It was dark and there was a slight chill in the air. She wrapped her cloak tightly around her and struggled not to let the bottom of her dress fall on the ground. She felt foolish for asking her question as she followed behind them. They had all given her odd looks. Her grandmother had even laughed but how was she to know they had a plan.

After all it, hadn't occurred to her until the entrance hall, just how big her dress was, and how small the carriages were, especially with all of them. As far as she knew a carriage only seated four and there were four of them, it didn't leave a lot of space. She thought perhaps no one had thought about it, she was just trying to be helpful. Of course everything she did these days was considered wrong.

They made their way down the front path to the carriages. Korina saw her grandmother's carriage and another that had no roof. It was just like an open wagon but made of finer materials. She understood now, how she would fit and wondered why she hadn't thought of it before.

The Baroness pointed out the open carriage just in case Korina missed it "See." she said in a condescending tone. "You'll have plenty of room."

She watched them all get into her grandmothers' carriage and realized, she would be riding in the other by herself, good, she thought as it pulled away. She heard them laughing and couldn't help but think, they were laughing at her.

The open carriage pulled up and the servants helped her into it, gathering and adjusting her dress. When she was seated, she found she took up most the carriage, it was quite embarrassing. She found herself reminded of the Magleys' hens.

The Magelys' were an old couple, a ways from her house that had set up a chicken farm. Whatever they were feeding their hens, made them quite fat. The better to eat them later, she supposed. Korina remembered watching them through the fence, with her brother. They were so big and fat that when they sat on their nests, they could completely cover it. It was silly to see such fat hens, in tiny nests. Korina felt like a fat hen now as the carriage took off. She couldn't help but wonder if one day she would be eaten too.

It was a long ride to the Debutante Ball and Korina had a lot of time to think... Ever since she'd arrived in Crestmoore, she felt out of her element, foolish weak and incomplete... no that was not the word... incomprehension... no that didn't sound right either it was an incomp word, she just learned it a few weeks ago but couldn't recall it.

She closed her eyes and then it came to her, "Incompetent!" she said aloud. The coachmen turned to her and gave Korina a funny look. She quickly apologized, "Sorry I was practicing my vocabulary,"

Her explanation didn't seem to help matters. The coachmen just continued to look at her strangely and then shared a look, between one another before facing forward, once more. Korina sighed and continued to think. Here she felt foolish, weak and out of place. She works so hard to fit in but could she ever, truly belong? Did she want to?

She crossed her arms and closed her eyes once more, thinking. She knew things, she could do things…loads of things. She knew how to hike, how to pace herself and find her way, when she got lost. She knew how to find food and survive in the winter. She knew what to do, if she was ever caught in an avalanche. She knew about the birds in the mine…Korina could picture the Baroness thinking they were pretty but Korina knew to watch the birds and if they stopped singing, stopped moving, to get out immediately.

Yes Korina knew things, just because they didn't seem to matter here, didn't mean they weren't something. Let's see how well the Baroness did back in the Avilini Mining Camp. She pictured the Baroness in an avalanche and doubted she'd spit if her life depended on it. The Baroness probably couldn't even survive a few hours on her own. She'd probably tear her dress and be done or slip in her high shoes and fall off the side of the mountain. Korina quietly cackled to herself but sighed after a moment, knowing she was just trying to distract herself.

She'd worked so hard, done what she could, to get here but what if after everything, no one... no one chose her, or worse, what if someone chose her but she didn't love them. She wouldn't marry them of course but in both cases she'd be going home alone. She was used to disappointing her grandmother and the Baroness but to disappoint her father.

He'd put such faith in her and she knew how he worried about her. He didn't want her to be alone... She didn't want him to have to work so hard on his own. Still, if no one chose her and she didn't hear back from him in the next week, she would request to go home.

It was strange to think all of this would be for nothing but her father had taught her sometimes you work hard, chip away at your goals and they don't turn out. Sometimes you have to change direction and make new goals.

If she didn't succeed here... If she wasn't to marry, then Korina would find another way to go about. She would make new goals and find other opportunities. She smiled feeling hopeful, even though she didn't have any other plans right now, she knew as long as she didn't give up there were still possibilities.

The carriage slowed and Korina found they were nearly there. She grew excited, she'd heard stories about Crestmoores' debutante ball. Her mother had been to a few, when she was a child and then when it was her time. She'd told Korina it was magical, everything sparkled and the music was divine. For one night it was as if you stepped into another world.

As they drew closer she saw torches lighting the way and then lanterns everywhere. Korinas' carriage pulled to a stop and she noticed a gentle fragrance filled the air. Though it was a bit chilly she suddenly felt warm, she could hear music in the distance and found herself entranced looking all about.

The others had already exited her grandmothers' carriage, when Korina made no attempt to get out, the Baroness came over. She loudly cleared her throat. Korina realized she'd just been looking around. She took notice of the coach men's outstretched hand and blushed with embarrassment, With some careful maneuvering she got out.

On the ground the Baroness gave her a look. "You would do well to stay focused. There is far too much at risk, for you to become distracted now."

Korina nodded but didn't say anything. They joined her grandmother and the Baron. Together they walked down a long path that led to Crestmoores' historic event hall. It was a great building, that was several stories tall. There were statues everywhere and various stain glass windows, depicting the history of Crestmoore.

Korina found herself taken in by all of it but made sure to pay attention to her surroundings. They moved into the entrance hall and it was the biggest one Korina had seen yet. The ceilings were arched and decorated with paintings, again depicting the history of Crestmoore.

Dozens' of servants were lined up taking cloaks and helping people. Korina heard the music echo into the hall and every so often, she heard a voice call out, introducing someone. They got into a loose line and a man with a long list, when about checking names.

When he got to them, he greeted her grandmother and then the Barron and Baroness, bowing. Korina didn't know his status, she was uncertain if she should curtsy. He looked taken aback when he saw her. She counted in her head and then curtsied, when he did not bow.

"Oh my," he said confused, "Who is this?"

"Lady Korina Andon," said her grandmother.

"Lady Andon," said the man, "Forgive me," he quickly bowed.

Again Korina was unsure if he was a servant or of status… She wrinkled her brow as the man righted himself. He quickly checked his list, marking off several names before he motioned to a male servant that was standing against a wall, with his hands in front of him. The servant rushed over bowing to all of them.

The man quickly informed the servant, "This is Lady Korina Andon, please escort her"

The servant nodded and then moved to stand by Korina. He offered out his arm and said, "If you will allow me, I shall take you to the Gathering Hall,"

"Oh," said Korina. The Baroness had told her about this. She knew she was to be taken to a separate room until she was introduced, she just didn't expect it to be so soon.

"Good luck," said her grandmother with a warm smile, "We'll see you inside,"

Korina nodded and then took the mans' arm but before they stepped away the Baroness reached out and whispered into Korinas' ear, "Do not embarrass me,"

Korina looked at the Baroness, of course, not embarrassing her was Korinas' biggest concern tonight. She scowled at her for a moment and then let the man lead her out of the entrance hall. They moved into a dimly lit corridor and Korina found it unsettling.

Her heart quickened and it was hard to hear the music. After a bit, she only heard the clacking of their shoes and rustling of their clothes as they moved. The corridor began to feel endless, every so often they would turn into a new corridor and it looked the same.

Korina began to feel like she was in a state of limbo. She grew more and more nervous with each turn and her palms began to sweat. Finally they broke through into another hall. She supposed this was the gathering hall as there were dozens of young women, with elaborate dresses. Some were standing or sitting on their own but most were grouped up, chatting away with excitement.

Without a word, the servant let go of Korinas' arm and slipped away, back into the corridor. Korina stood alone and some of the woman looked at her, sizing her up. Several women looked away quickly unimpressed while a few girls giggled and whisper far too loudly, on how she looked.

She couldn't hear every word but picked up on various comments, 'look at her dress' "Is that her dress or her' 'I heard her mother...' 'what is she even doing here' 'they let anyone in these days' 'wont have to worry about her' 'is she even a lady.' Korina was not used to hearing such bitter words. Clearly they must no she could hear them but they didn't seem to care.

She struggled not to bite her lip and instead stumbled forward. She tried to find a place other then the doorway. She considered sitting but in the end just chose a wall to stand near. She kept her head down and tried to stay focused. They continued to whisper about how she moved and stood.

Of all the things she expected tonight, this moment wasn't among them. Tears began to well up in her eyes as she felt hurt. She didn't know these women, she had no ill will towards them and yet the moment she entered- She thought of the Baroness and then a thought occurred to her. She raised her head up high and smiled pleasantly.

In all her training the Baroness had taught her, a proper Lady did not gossip. These women… they were not proper, she was. The thought oddly brought her comfort. She took a big breath and let out a pleasant sigh. Another woman was brought in and she watched as the whispers turned to her now. Just as they had picked at Korina they picked at this new woman.

The woman had curly red hair and dozens of freckles, she looked around the room nervously. Korina wanted to go to her and say something nice but the woman spotted her friend. She quickly joined her and they went off to the side. A moment later the woman was smiling. Korina continued to hold her head up and was glad the woman had someone. It would have been nice if she had someone too.

The rude comments and giggles continued with each young woman that arrived. Korina wanted to say something but there were so many of them. As the room filled up tensions only seemed to grow. It got so loud that Korina could barely think. The room wasn't large but it also wasn't small, however with all the young women and their dresses, it became quite uncomfortable. Korina found she could use some fresh air but knew now was not the time, to be wandering off.

Thankfully after a few more minutes a man and woman entered the room. The woman rang a bell, getting the rooms attention. Korina watched as almost all the young women curtsied, to the man and woman, she quickly did the same.

When they rose up again, they were instructed to step forward, when their name was called and go through another doorway. Korina looked at the doorway they gestured to. She tried to see what was on the other side but only saw another endless corridor.

The man began to read off names and young woman after woman stepped forward. Korina listened hard for her name. She realized after a few names, they were being called in order of their status. She listened and waited as the room slowly began to get bigger and quieter, with each name that was called.

When they got to the Ladies, Korina perked up. A young lady who was sitting on a bench had her name called. She nearly jumped up and seemed shaken. She nervously stumbled forward and through the doorway. Korina heard her name next and quickly stepped up and into the corridor.

In no time at all, she caught up to the nervous young woman, in front of her. She moved so slowly that Korina had to wait for her. The young woman that came after Korina grew impatient, at how slow they were moving, she quickly yelled ahead, for the young woman to move faster or step aside.

The young woman moved faster and after some time they met up with the other women. A line formed going in to another larger room. The line moved very slowly, perhaps a step a minute. While the Gathering Hall had been noisy, the line was dead quiet.

Korina grew restless as she heard the music again and the muffled voice of a man making introductions, followed by applause. The closer they drew to the next room, the louder the sounds got. Several well dressed men, entered the corridor and stood beside the young women. Korinas' escort stood next to her and offered out his arm. Her heart fluttered as she took it, knowing it was almost time.

She paid attention to the rhythm of things. A young woman's name would be called and she would step into the larger room. Something nice would be said about her and then there would be applause. Finally there was a moment of quiet and then another name was called. With each name and step, Korina could see more and more into the larger room. She had to remind herself to breathe.

The young woman in front of Korina grew more and more nervous. Korina wasn't sure if she was going to run or faint. She wondered if she should say something encouraging to her but was barely managing herself. The young woman's name was called and she froze.

Korina wondered what would happen if she did not step forward. Her name was called again, this time her escort pulled her forward. She dragged behind a bit but quickly went with him. The announcer made a joke about it and the whole room laughed. He cleared his throat and said the young woman enjoyed horseback riding and sunsets, applause quickly followed.

Korina and her escort stepped up. She saw the next room was a large ballroom. The Baroness had told her it would be large but this was unfathomable. Everything shined and sparkled just as her mother had said. The ceiling was so high that it looked like the night sky. In the center of the room, there was a massive crystal chandelier with hundreds of candles. There was a section for tables and chairs with dozens of people if not a hundred. There was a full orchestra, softly playing and a large polished open area for dancing.

It was so much to take in, she completely missed her name being called. Her escort pulled her forward and she stumbled, barely catching herself from falling. All the eyes in the room fell on her. She corrected herself and tried to remember her training. She heard the Baronesses' voice in her head, telling her, 'head up, one foot in front of the other, gracefully as if you were balancing a book on your head.'

The announcer said Korina enjoyed music and art. Her escort walked her around the room so everyone could see her. The crowd applauded and she tried to find her grandmother and the Baroness but they were lost in a sea of people. When her escort had finished taking her around, the next name was called.

Korina was brought over to a wall and lined up, with the rest of the young woman. The nervous woman in front of her was now at her side. Korinas' escort let her go and slipped away. Several more names were called as Korina continued to look around the room.

When the last name was called, the music stopped. The announcer made a speech, his voice boomed and echoed through the room as he shouted but Korina barely heard a word, her heart was pounding so loudly. She kept swallowing and found her throat completely dry. The speech suddenly came to an end and the announcer wished all the young women good luck. The room filled with applause and a large bell rang. The music started up once again, this time it was much louder and livelier.

Korina watched as old and young men, stood up from their seats and slowly made their way over to them. One by one, the young women around her, were plucked away onto the dance floor. Korina stood proper, holding her breath in anticipation. She looked around watching and waiting for someone to approach her and yet, time after time again, she was passed by, and looked over.

She spotted her grandmother with the Baron and Baroness at a table. They were looking about and she thought to wave to them but could just hear the Baronesses' voice in her head shrill, 'Don't you even dare.' Korina let out a sigh and continued to wait.

The number of young women around her dwindled. Envious she watched those that had been chosen spin around the room, getting to know their partners. Her head began to droop, ever so slightly as her heart anxiously fluttered. She looked up and down the line and saw only a few young women remained.

Soon it was only her and the nervous young woman at her side. However, nearly midway through the song, someone approached her as well. Korina watched as the woman's face lit up as a gentleman outstretched his hand to her. The woman took it and was whisked onto the dance floor. Only Korina remain now, she clasped her hands together and tried to stay positive. She reminded herself it was just the first song, the first dance, she had the whole night…

"Oh my," said Countess Bray as the first song ended. "No one chose her. That isn't a good sign."

"Don't worry, there is still plenty of time." assured Velona." I doubt all these women were really chosen. I'm sure some of their family's made arrangements for the first dance."

"Perhaps we should have done that as well or perhaps this wasn't the right season. Maybe we should have trained her longer and gone next year."

"Nonsense." said Velona, taking out his fan. There was no way, he would've wasted a year on this. "She is not getting any younger and you had your health to consider."

The Countess sighed deeply, "True, you're right but she worked so hard. I hope someone steps up."

"I'm sure someone will," said Velona, though he doubted it.

He began to fan himself, knowing full well, Korina, might not be chosen. Velona always liked to consider every possible outcome. He'd worked magic taking a mountain twat and turning her into a proper tart, at least at a distance. However, he knew there were rules and standards.

Even all dressed up, the people of Crestmoore knew the rumors that surrounded Korina. It wasn't his fault, she was damaged goods. It was a pity, all his hard work would go to waste but as far as he was concerned he'd done his part, the arrangement was just to prepare her for the ball and here she was.

***

The second song came and went and then the third and fourth... Korina continued to wait and watch, hopeful. Some of the young women, stumbled or fell, a few times they even bumped into each other as they danced but at least they got to dance.

Each time, a song ended, some girls would switch partners, while others would get back against the wall and have to wait to be chosen again. Not a single gentleman, looked Korinas' way. Tears began to well up in her eyes as the fifth song began. She wondered what she had done wrong, just how had she failed? She wadded up her dress in her hands, thinking. She'd done nearly everything they had asked of her, worked hard, so hard and yet... and yet...no one wanted her...

Korina sniffled and a tear escaped her eye, sliding down her cheek. Her vision became blurry and she almost didn't notice, the feet before her. She swallowed, realizing she'd let her head fall, she slowly lifted it, to see someone was standing before her, Duke Kerr.

He offered out his hand as another tear rolled down her cheek. "Forgive me," he said "For being late. May I have this dance, my Lady."

Korinas' lips quivered and she found her voice caught in her throat. She nodded, hoping it would be enough. The Duke gently smiled at her and she took his hand. Her heart nearly exploded as he guided her onto the dance floor.

When they found a spot, they intertwined their fingers and she placed her hand on his shoulder. She felt him rest his hand on her side and almost couldn't believe it. At last here she was, here they were, together, dancing...she was dancing.

The food was sub-par at best, it was clear they had spent most the money on the decorations. Velona ate a few bites and then pushed his plate aside. Beckett had already finished eating and sighed. Velona could tell he was just as bored as he was. Thankfully this event only took place once a year.

"Oh, oh my!" said Countess Bray, suddenly perking up in her chair.

Velona and Beckett looked at her. He wondered if her heart was finally giving out, here and now, at least that would be something. However the Countess quickly continued. "She's dancing, someone asked Korina, to dance,"

Velona quickly turned to where Korina had been standing, to find her gone. He'd been watching her a few minutes ago but after the third song, he could see her training was beginning to slip. She was getting emotional and looked rather pathetic. He liked a good train wreck as much as anyone but it just got sad. He'd looked away and instead focused on who was here and who wasn't.

He looked for her now, wondering just who had asked her? Who had he captured with his net? Her grandmother seemed to know where she was and he followed her gaze as she said, "Who is she dancing with? I can't see."

Velona spotted Korina and also didn't recognize the man she was with, only seeing his back. What caught his eye was Korina. She had a huge smile on her face and was glowing with excitement. He parted his lips, staring at her for a moment and then grimaced, opening his fan. He covered the bottom half of his face as he glared at her. He'd warned her not to overdo her emotions. It was okay to smile but she was acting like a fool, laughing about.

Korina and her partner spun, her back was now to Velona and he could finally see, who she was dancing with. Velonas' eyes widened and again his lips parted but it was the Countess that spoke." Is that... Is that Duke Kerr!"

Velona tensed and froze for a long second, staring at the Duke. His mind raced and his heart skipped about and then he smiled. He folded his fan back up and said,"Why yes, I do believe it is."

He'd been concerned for a second, seeing the Duke and Korina together, yet again but there was no way the Duke was a potential suitor. His status aside, everyone knew how much he'd loved his wife, it was clear he was never to marry again. Really, Velona was surprised to see him here at all. He was no doubt dancing with her out of pity.

Yes... he knew not to put any stock in it, unlike the Countess, who was gushing at the mere sight of them together. Velona let out a pleasant sigh and then paused…He wrinkled his brow realizing he was relieved Korina had not found a potential suitor. Why...wasn't that what they were here for, wasn't that what he'd worked so hard for.

He stared at the table for a moment and then looked out at Korina smiling, dancing, glowing brighter then ever. His chest ached feeling heavy and extremely tight… … He scoffed, thinking this was just what he needed, the food was already giving him heart burn.

He turned from Korina and took up his wine. He took several long sips and assured himself, he wasn't concerned or relieved. He was just keeping an eye out for the real matches. It did no good to get worked up over nothing. Yes, when a real match found Korina then he might... might mind you, get excited but really, he didn't care...he was done.

***

Korinas' first dance was over before she knew it. She was so excited and then focused on not making a mistake, that she didn't say a word to the Duke. When the song ended, she felt sad. She didn't want this moment to end. She wanted it to go on forever, if not, then just for a moment longer.

The couples started pulling apart, young women changed partners or returned to the wall. Korina let go of the Duke and stepped back. She lingered for a moment, wondering if she should say something. The next song began and she knew she needed to move out of the way. She stepped back, to return to the wall but the Duke stepped forward and offered out his hand, once more. He smiled at her and simply said "Again?"

Korina nodded and said, "Yes,"

She took his hand and they began to dance once again. This time she made sure to savor every moment and to thank him. She didn't want to forget to thank him. "Thank you."

"For what?" He asked as they spun.

"For this." said Korina. "Dancing with me."

He chuckled and flashed Korina a charming smile before he dipped her. When she came up he said, "You don't have to thank me. The pleasure is all mine."

Korinas face grew hot, she looked away from him and said, "Yes, well just the same…this… this means the world to me. I feared I might not get the chance to dance tonight, it feels only fair to thank you for giving me that chance."

"No,"he said. "Once again the privilege is all mine," Korina looked up at him. His expression was sincere. Her heart swooned and she didn't know what to say. The Duke continued, "You are beautiful, smart and talented, any man would be lucky to dance with you."

Korina smiled,"Then I guess you are very lucky, because we have danced twice."

"I suppose I am," he said as the song ended.

The Duke pulled away this time. "I suppose, I should let someone else have a chance."

Korina looked at him and then around the room. She didn't want him to go, she didn't want to dance with anyone else, she wanted to keep talking to him. The Duke nodded to her and stepped back. Korina stepped forward this time and said, "They had their chance. I hope you don't mind but I would love to dance with you again."

Korina held her breath knowing she was breaking the rules. A lady, was never to ask anyone to dance but when it came to the Duke, she found she didn't care what rules she broke. Still, she worried he might turn her down.

The Duke looked at her, truly looked and had a strange expression on his face. His eyes were sad at first, then happy, he smiled and said," I would be honored,"

The two came together once more. The next dance, was more intense, it was fast paced and had a lot of moves to it. They didn't have a lot of time to talk as they tried to keep up with the music and avoid running into other couples. When the song ended neither pulled away, they simply stared at one another, waiting for the next song to begin.

***

Velona fanned himself as he watched them dance yet again. It was getting ridiculous. He kept a smile on his face but it was getting harder and harder. Each time a song ended and new one began, he expected them to pull apart but they didn't, they just kept dancing with one another.

He grinded his teeth, thinking Korina was wasting her opportunities, her chances of finding a real suitor. He kept waiting for her to turn to him and seek his approval but not once did she look over, she just kept staring at the Duke, like an idiot. He tapped his fingers on the table, fanning himself harder.

He saw them talking and wondered what on earth, she could be going on about. What was she thinking... more importantly what was the Duke thinking? He knew Korina well, she was probably just happy to be dancing but what about the Duke. Velona was usually good at reading people but the Duke didn't play by the standard set of rules.

He thought the Duke was dancing with her out of pity but it didn't need to extend the whole night... Velona clenched one of his fists, under the table and continued to watch them intently, he saw how she...how she looked at him…and how the Duke looked at her. Just what was he up to... people were beginning to stare and talk, yet he didn't seem to care, about his reputation or hers for that matter.

Velona let out a heavy sigh and Beckett noticed his agitation. "Are you okay?" he asked.

"Yes..." said Velona not looking away from Korina and the Duke, "I'm just fine,"

Beckett continued to looked at him and didn't seem to think so, "Why don't we get some fresh air?"

"You go, I'm busy," said Velona. He wasn't about to walk away now. He'd been here since the beginning, he'd trained her, he might as well watch her throw it all away.

***

Korina lost count of how many times they danced, her feet began to feel sore and she was getting a little winded, if not sweaty. The Duke didn't seem to mind and they continued to talk, commenting on each other's grace or in some cases the lack thereof. They talked about the weather, the decorations and of food. Korina had barely eaten anything all day and apparently, the Duke hadn't eaten at all. She wondered why asking, "Why not?"

"I had a lot on my mind," he said. "And when I got here, I barely had my foot in the door before asking you to dance."

"Oh, I didn't know, if you want we can stop so you could eat."

"I'm not hungry," he said, "Besides I didn't come here for the food,"

"Why did you come here?" asked Korina. She hadn't expected to see him here tonight. She'd hoped but knew and fully understood his situation.

He looked at Korina and then looked away hesitantly. She could tell he was debating, saying what he wanted to say. She recalled the other day when he said she could speak freely and offered the same to him. "Relax, you needn't put on airs with me. I prefer you speak as you wish."

He looked at her and smiled. He let out a chuckle and then said. "I came here, to see you. I simply wished to see you again. I didn't plan on speaking with you or getting in the way. However when I saw you standing there and realize no one had asked you to dance. I simply couldn't help myself." Korina looked him, her eyes went wide with his honesty. He'd come here for her, he'd wanted to see her again and couldn't help himself. The Duke continued. "I apologize if I have encroached, it's just, you are the first woman I've taken interest in since...since..."

Korina held him tight as he struggled. "I heard, my grandmother told me after the Waters' Party. I am sorry for your loss,"

He nodded and simply said, "Thank you,"

They were quiet for the next three songs and Korina wondered if she should say something more. The song they were dancing to ended and the announcer called out that the next song, was the last dance. If anyone wanted to choose a partner, this was their last chance, again they did not part.

The song started up and it was something light and slow. They shuffled about and Korina bit her lip thinking, if she was going to say something, it was now or never. He'd been so open, so honest with her it was only fair she do the same.

She wasn't quite sure how to say it as she'd never said such things to someone. She stumbled over her words, hoping the meaning would not get lost. "You... I...I wanted to say. You are unlike anyone, I've ever met,"

The Duke raised an eyebrow and asked, "Is that a good thing or a bad thing?"

"Good," she said, "It's a good thing. I… what I'm trying to say is… I wanted to see you again too."

He looked at her and smiled. She hoped he'd understood. She wanted him to know, she liked him too, though things felt complicated. She wasn't exactly sure how this all worked or even if it could work with him. She might also be getting ahead of herself, this might just be dancing and some conversation, nothing more.

"Korina," he said

"Yes?" she said, coming out of her thoughts.

"The song has ended,"

"Oh," said Korina. "Sorry, sometimes I get lost in thought."

"I don't mind," he said, "But I think you're supposed to get back in line."

"Right," said Korina, looking around. She saw all the young woman were returning to the wall. "I suppose I am."

They pulled apart and were the last couple to leave the floor. Korina scrambled to get back to the wall. Once she was standing with her back against it, she sought out the Duke and found him leaning against a wall of his own, in the dining area.

The announcer gave a closing speech but Korina barely heard it as she and the Duke stared at one another, from across the room. Soon enough, applause filled the room and the Debutante Ball, was over. People began to move about and Korina wondered, if it would be okay to go to the Duke. However before she could decide on anything, she saw the Baroness, barreling toward her.

She just barely caught a glimpse of the Duke as he nodded to her and then disappeared into the crowd. The Baroness was quite upset when she reached her. She scolded Korina, for not looking to her for advice but Korina had been so caught up in everything, that the thought hadn't even occurred to her. The Baroness scolded her for dancing with the same man all night, even if it was the Duke, she needed to broaden her chances. The Baroness told her the Duke couldn't possibly have any real interest in her but Korina barley listened to her, drifting on a cloud of joy.

Her grandmother and the Baron, joined them a moment later. Her grandmother for the most part seemed happy for her. She didn't scold Korina and simply asked if she had enjoyed herself, oh had Korina ever.

They slowly made their way out of the ballroom and collected their cloaks. As they waited for their carriages, the Baroness continued to scold her but again Korina ignored her. She mostly kept an eye out for the Duke, hoping to get one last look. When the carriages arrived, the Baroness let out a long sigh. She shook her head and said they would continue their conversation later. Korina barely managed to nod her head.

The Baroness and the others, got into their carriage and Korina got into hers a moment later. She enjoyed the solitude and quiet on her way back. She replayed the nights events in her head, everything she had done, everything he had done, the words that were spoken and how it had all made her feel.

She wondered if this was what it was like to fall in love, or perhaps the beginnings of it. She knew she shouldn't think beyond this moment, beyond this night but she had a feeling, from the way he'd looked at her and had spoken to her, that this was only the beginning. She had no doubt in her mind they would meet again.

***

In the carriage, Velona was on edge. He grinded his teeth thinking, the entire night had been a waste. Everyone around him, seemed to think it was a success but he knew better. The Duke had ruined everything. Perhaps, just perhaps, someone had been interested in Korina tonight. Maybe they were waiting, working up the courage to approach her. Maybe they had a few others they wanted to dance with first. Yes...perhaps...perhaps there had been some real interest but the Duke had ruined everything.

He'd danced with Korina all night and hadn't given anyone else an opportunity and now...now they were left with nothing. Oh, some might say, perhaps the Duke really was interested but Velona knew better. Korina was far, far beneath the Duke, there was no way he was seriously interested. Perhaps... he had done this on purpose, yes...Velona didn't know all the details of when the Duke and Korina had first met but from what he understood, she had offended him.

Perhaps the Duke had planned this...Perhaps he'd only pretended to forgive her slight, even introduced his daughter to further his plans, only to toy with Korina, on the most important night of her life. Yes, it made sense the Duke was seeking revenge. She had made a fool of him and now in turn, he had made a fool of her. Yes, Velona could see it clearly but it would seem he was the only one.

He sighed thinking of how he'd tried to tell Korina what she'd done wrong, just how badly she'd messed up and how the Duke couldn't possibly have any real interest in her but he doubted she'd heard a single word he'd said. No she'd just stared off into space with those big eyes of hers and that stupid fucking grin. She...she probably thought she was...in love.

Velona scoffed, she'd learn...she'd learn soon enough. It wasn't his fault that she was blind, to the cruelties of this world. You could only teach someone so much, somethings they had to learn on their own.

The Countess let out a sigh of her own, drawing Velona from his thoughts. She suddenly seemed sad. He wondered if she'd finally realized just what had happened. He doubted she'd put it together. Velona looked at Beckett, he seemed restless, he'd been staring at him all night. Velona knew Beckett was infatuated with him but really. He sighed and supposed if Beckett, wasn't going to ask the Countess what was wrong, then he would.

He prepared his voice, sweetly asking "Is everything alright, Countess Bray?"

The Countess took a moment to respond, lost in her thoughts. Velona began to wonder if it really was in their blood, to drift off like this. The Countess looked up at him, realizing he'd spoken to her. "Oh...yes, I just...well I suppose it's time,"

"For what?" asked Velona.

"To tell Korina of her fathers' passing, as you instructed I have waited,"

"Ah yes," said Velona, he'd all but forgotten.

"I suppose, I shouldn't put it off any longer but she's just so happy. Tonight was such a big night for her... Perhaps I should put it off for another day or so, if not until the morning."

"No," said Velona,"You mustn't put it off any further She will already be quite upset, we waited this long but it had to be done."

"Yes...yes..." said the Countess.

He could clearly see, she didn't want to do it. Nobody seemed to like telling someone of a loved ones passing. Velona found he didn't mind, sometimes he even rather enjoyed it. Their pain...it was the only time he ever felt connected... Perhaps it was because pain was his life and even if it were only for a moment, someone else could know the pain, he endured. The heavy weight he carried within.

He looked to the Countess and offered, "If you wish, I could inform her."

"You..." said the Countess. He saw a sliver of hope but she quickly masked it. Clearly she didn't want to appear too eager. She went on for a moment drawing it out."I...well I don't know... You've been so helpful but perhaps, this is something I should really do. We are family after all and this is a family matter."

"Yes, but I have been around her more, these last few months and I have read all her letters to her father. I believe she would take it better, hearing it from me and if she doesn't, I could spare you the blow."

The Countess pretended to hesitate for a moment longer but was clearly happy to pass on the burden of such a task, "I suppose you're right… When and how will you do it?"

"When we arrive, I shall assist her in changing. When it is just the two of us, I shall sit her down and carefully break the news. You should instruct the servants not to interrupt us. Feel free to retire for the night, if you wish. You can speak with Korina in the morning. I'm sure by then the worst of it should be over."

"I'll inform the staff not to interfere, though I have a letter her father left."

"Have a servant deliver it to her rooms. Once the letter is delivered, I will inform her and give it to her. Perhaps it will help,"

The Countess nodded."Yes, perhaps"

"Have you read the letter?" asked Velona, curiously.

"No...I felt it wasn't appropriate. It is addressed solely to her,"

"Hmm," said Velona wondering what it said. He considered reading it before hand but thought better of it. He was sure he'd see it later, after Korina opened it. She might even want him to read it to her.

Beckett looked at him concerned, "It is rather late,"

Velona sighed, it was clear he wanted to talk. Whatever it was could wait, "If you do not wish to wait, you can return home and I shall take another carriage later,"

"I can wait," said Beckett. Velona knew he could wait forever but gave him a look. Beckett sighed and continued "Of course if you think it's best, I'll leave you to it."

"Oh my..." said the Countess, looking out the carriage window. She just realized how late is was, "It is rather late, isn't it. Perhaps... you could spend the night, if it becomes too distressing."

"Perhaps," said Velona, "It would not be best to rush these things,"

"We wouldn't want to trouble you," said Beckett. "Staying on such short notice,"

"Oh it's no trouble, with all that you have done and have offered to do. I am sure you're both very tired. I'll have the servants prepare some quarters."

"If you insist," said Beckett.

"I do, I don't like the idea of you traveling about, in the middle of the night, even if it is Crestmoore,"

"Then it's settled," said Velona, clasping his hands. He rested them on his lap a moment later, and looked out the window. He thought of Korina and how smug she had looked when he'd attempted to speak with her. He looked forward to wiping that smile off her face.

***

It was quite late, when they arrived home but Korina didn't feel tired at all. She practically jumped out of the carriage and danced into the manor. When they all got inside, the servants took their cloaks. Korina assumed the Baron and Baroness would be taking their carriage home but seemed to be staying for a little while.

Korina noticed her grandmother didn't seem happy. She moved about slowly, somberly and appeared to be lost in her thoughts once again. Korina wondered, if something had happened on the carriage ride home.

Before she could approach her, the Baroness insisted she help Korina change out of her dress before she got it any dirtier. Korina found she almost didn't want to take it off. She didn't want this night to end but had to admit it was getting a bit heavy. Slowly coming down from her euphoria she began to notice her body ached. She considered requesting a hot bath before bed.

She went to the stairs with the Baroness and found it was a lot easier going up, then down. Though she still couldn't see her feet, she could lift them and feel the next stare with the toe of her shoe. She ascended slowly and nearly halfway up her grandmother called out to her. "Korina."

Korina paused, turning, the Baroness was only a few stairs behind her and also turned. Her grandmother looked like she wanted to say something but looked to the Baroness for a second. She furrowed her brow and then put on a half smile, saying, "Goodnight."

"Goodnight..." said Korina, finding it odd.

Her grandmother's voice had sounded strained. Korina watched her sigh and then turn, going off into another room. Korina wondered if she should go to her and ask if she was okay. Without thinking, she stepped forward losing her footing. She started to fall forward and might have tumbled down the stairs and no doubt taken the Baroness with her. However, the Baroness had already turned around and when she saw Korina falling, reached out her hand, placing it squarely on Korinas' chest. The Baroness helped Korina not to fall and regain her balance.

Korina grasped hold of the banister as the Baroness cursed under her breath, "I swear you are trying to kill us both. You are the clumsiest woman I've ever met."

"S...sorry."said Korina. She knew this was becoming a bit of a habit. It was the third or fourth time, the Baroness had caught her. Korina swallowed, feeling embarrassed, she tried to explain. "I just wanted to make sure my grandmother was okay. She looks a bit sad. I'm worried something might have upset her."

"She is simply tired." assured the Baroness. "If... you are fortunate enough to make it to her age, I'm sure you would be too. Now, turn around,"

"Sorry," said Korina, once again. She turned around and carefully went upstairs.

They went to Korinas' dressing room, she expected Betsy or another servant, to join them but it was just, her and the Baroness. She worried the Baroness was going to scold her more but she seemed quite content helping Korina change. They slowly and carefully removed Korinas' dress and placed it on a dress form. Korina was surprised at how much lighter she felt. She danced about in her undergarments and boots. The Baroness watched her for a moment before she shook her head and instructed Korina to wash her face.

Korina washed her face, while the Baroness picked out a nightgown for her to wear. She unlaced her boots and they loosened her corset, before she put it on. Finally they went to Korinas' vanity and undid her hair, brushing it out.

After a few minutes, there was a knock at the door. The Baroness handed Korina her brush and instructed her to finish. She left the dressing room and was gone for a minute or two. When the Baroness came back, she stood in the doorway. She said she would like to see Korina, in her sitting room, when she was finished. The Baroness left and Korina found it peculiar. She continued brushing her hair, wondering who had been at the door. Again she wondered where Betsy was? Korina finished and then put on some slippers.

She went into her sitting room and found the Baroness at the fireplace with a poker. She moved the firewood about, adjusting the blaze. When she saw Korina, she put the poker away and gestured for her to sit on the couch.

Korina realized this must be it, the Baroness had said they would continue their conversation later, she must have considered this later. Korina took a seat at the couch and prepared herself for a lecture, on everything she'd done wrong. Right or wrong, Korina had still had a wonderful night dancing with the Duke. No matter how much the Baroness scolded her, that fact would always remain.

Korina folded her hands in her lap as the Baroness sat down next to her. She studied Korina for a long moment, there was something unsettling, about the way her ice blue eyes looked. Korina pulled back a bit, hoping she would start soon, the silence becoming awkward.

"Korina," said the Baroness. She reached out, placing her hand on Korinas'. It felt cold as she slowly moved it back and forth.

Korina looked at her strangely. Touching, wasn't really something the Baroness did, less there was a reason. Korina had a bad feeling about this as she said,"Yes." Again the Baroness stared."What is it?" asked Korina, when she failed to respond.

The Baroness just continued to stare at her, with those piercing eyes, then all at once she said, "I have a letter for you."

"A letter..."

"From your father."

Korina lit up, excitedly, she couldn't help but think, tonight was just getting better and better. Finally he'd responded, she'd been so worried. "Where is it? I want to read it?"

The Baroness gestured to the table in front of the couch. Korina had completely missed a silver tray with a letter on it. The Baroness lifted the tray and handed it to Korina. She quickly took the letter and practically ripped it open. Joy, swelled within her as she saw her father's scratchy handwriting. Her eyes danced across the letter as she read.

Dear Korina,

I hope by the time you are reading this letter, you are safely settled in Crestmoore. There is so much I have to tell you, so much I wish I could say to you. I find my hand trembles as I write this letter. I have thought about this day, this letter so many times. I suppose I can not afford to put it off any longer.

Some time ago, on one of my outings into town, I met with a doctor. I learned my health is not to improve. Soon enough, I will be joining your mother and brother. I know upon reading this, you will be hurt, if not angry with me, for not telling you this in person.

Please forgive me, but I could not find the strength and I knew that if I told you, you would want to stay with me until the very end. I do not wish for that to be our last memory together. My time with you has been so precious to me. I got to know you, to watch you grow into a kind and loving woman. I regret that I will not be here to see how much more you will become.

I hope someday you can understand and forgive me for sending you away, know that everything I did was out of love. You should know that it was I that contacted your grandmother. I am sorry that I have lied to you. Despite everything that has happened between us, all those years ago, she has agreed to take you in and care for you.

I know it will not be easy for you, at first. I know your grandmother can be cold and difficult at times but she is all the family you have left now. Please listen to her and do as she asks. I believe like me she has only your best interest in mine.

Please do not return to Avilini. I have asked that your grandmother, not give you this letter, until after I have passed. There is nothing here for you now and I have taken care of all the arrangements. Your grandmother can give you a better life, the kind of life you have always deserved. I want to believe you can be happy in Crestmoore. Please, live your life and pursue your passion in this world.

If you're lucky enough to find someone, who brings the light to you as your mother did for me, hold on to them, cherish them and never let them go. And try not to worry so much, life can be so short my Korina, but there is so much to enjoy.

Know that a piece of my heart has gone with you and wherever I am now, I will always be watching over you.

I love you and always will.

Your Father.

Korina paused for the longest time on the last line of the letter. She found she could not form a single thought. She read each and every word, carefully again and then again and then again. Each time, the letter made less and less sense.

The Baroness stared at her watching, waiting for Korina to look away from a letter. When she finally did the Baroness perked up. Korina stared at her and then looked back to the letter. A single thought had still, yet to appear.

"Korina," said the Baroness after a moment.

Korina just stared blankly at the letter. She couldn't think, she couldn't think, she wouldn't think. It wasn't true he… he… couldn't be…

"Korina," the Baroness said again.

Korina looked at the Baroness, without thinking she found herself speaking, asking, "When... When did this letter arrive?"

The Baroness breathed in deeply, "It arrived, when you did."

"Tonight," said Korina.

"No," said the Baroness."From what I understand, you gave this letter to your grandmother when you first arrived, some months ago"

Korina looked down at the envelope she'd torn open but didn't recognize it. She thought back to the day she'd left... Her father had given her a letter to give to her grandmother, it had been rather large, she supposed this letter could have been inside... Korina held the letter tightly, "Does this... Now that I'm getting this letter... Does that mean he's...he's" She couldn't think it...couldn't say it.

The Baroness reached out, touching her again. "I'm afraid so, your grandmother wished for me to inform you, of his passing and to give you this letter. I am sorry for your loss"

Korina stared at the letter again, for the longest time. The Baroness stared at her, studying her. Korina was reminded of her training, of how the Baroness would test her and then watch her reaction.

Without warning Korina suddenly stood, she stepped away from the couch and kept her back to the Baroness.

She held the letter to her chest. She didn't want to be tested… judged in this moment, even if that was not the Baronesses intent. Korina found she wanted to be alone... She was alone... Korina swallowed hard, closing her eyes she said "You...you have informed me, you can leave now."

She could hear the Baronesses' voice in her head, telling her it wasn't proper to dismiss someone of a higher status, so informally, especially when they were your guest but Korina didn't care. She pushed the voice away. What did it matter? What did any of it matter anymore...

The Baroness sounded surprised "Excuse me!"

"You can go," said Korina coldly, "We're done here"

Korina heard the Baroness stand, but she didn't leave. "Are you certain? If you would like, I could stay with yo-."

"No," interrupted Korina her voice rippled with emotion but she held it in. She turned walking into her entrance hall. She opened the door and gestured for the Baroness to leave. The Baroness moved slowly, when she got to the doorway, she paused. She looked at Korina for a moment and then said, "If you should need me...I'll be staying the night,"

Korina didn't say anything, she just waited. The Baroness stepped into the hallway and then turned around, she started to speak again but the Korina shut the door in her face. Alone, Korina stood there for a moment and then turned to return to her sitting room. She considered reading the letter again but couldn't bare the thought that he father had written it, when he was alive and now...he...he...he wasn't. Her father was dead.

Korina let go of the letter, letting it fall, it slid across the floor. She leaned against the doorway of the sitting room and stared at the fire for a moment before running a hand over her face and through her hair. She pulled from the doorway, feeling suddenly tired...exhausted by the days events.

She went back into her entrance hall and thought to go to bed but felt suddenly sick. She clutched her stomach and fell to her knees, holding herself. It was still...sinking in… Her chest felt tight as her eyes welled up with tears. She found she suddenly couldn't breathe.

She felt...confined and overwhelmed... She scrambled, tearing her nightgown off, she struggled with the cords of her corset, wanting to take it off, to breathe...to breathe. She tore her corset off and threw it across the room. She wanted to throw it away, throw it all away, she'd give it all away, give it all back...if she could just go home...if he could just, be there.

The entire world felt as if it was going to fall in on her and she let it, collapsing to the floor on her stomach. She laid there for a moment, her face pressed against the cold ground and then she turned rolling on her back, she stared up at the ceiling as a flood of tears overcame her…

***

Velona stood on the other side of the door in disbelief, he hadn't expected her reaction. Knowing her, he expected her to burst into tears, scream, perhaps she would even fall into his arms or bury herself in the couch in anguish...yet she'd pulled away from him. She'd calmly and told him to leave. It...it disturbed him, he didn't know why, but he hadn't wanted to leave not until she- what...what was it he'd wanted… from her.

Velona heard a small noise beyond the door. It slowly got louder and louder until he could finally hear Korina whimpering and sobbing. He pressed his head against the door for a moment and then pulled back letting out a breath of air. He hadn't realized he'd been holding his breath... He turned confused by his own actions. He saw a figure out of the corner of his eye and froze. He quickly realized it was Beckett. He was leaning up against the wall, just down the hall. How long had he been there?

Velona approached him and smiled, "You waited,"

Beckett didn't smile, he grimaced, "I'm concerned, you've become too invested, in this one,"

Velona scoffed and shook his head, "You worry about everything,"

Beckett looked at Korinas' door and then Velona saying, "Someone has too."

Velona gave him a look but didn't say anything, continuing down the hall.
