I set my alarm early enough so that I could take a long hot shower. It was worth the lack of sleep. I took my time getting ready and made myself some eggs and toast for breakfast. My dad got up as I was washing the dishes. He was always quiet in the morning. We made eye contract, but I knew better than to talk to him before he got his first cup of coffee. I got ready to go, but suddenly realized I'd never gotten my keys back.

My mom was still asleep. I knocked on her door, but didn't get a response so I knocked again, louder and said, "I'M GOING! CAN I HAVE MY KEYS?"

I heard her groan, "Mmm, my purse."

"Right," I said then dared to ask, "Can I have the car?"

"Not on your life!" she snapped back.

It was worth a shot. I got my keys from her purse, then grabbed a few mints from the candy jar and waved goodbye to my dad. He just nodded hunched over his coffee. I rushed downstairs and had three minutes to spare before I caught the bus. The parking lot was almost empty when I got there, maybe three cars. ne of which looked like it had been here a while.

Maybe I had gotten here a bit too early. When I got to the entrance there was a large metal gate, with a chain around it. I bit my lip and wondered what I should do. I didn't want to be late. I walked up to the gate and just stood there. Eventually a security guard on the other side of the gate noticed me and came over.

He pointed to the sign that listed the park's hours and said, "We don't open until ten."

"Yeah, sorry I'm a new hire. They told me to come early."

"Oh," said the security guard. He furrowed his brow then asked, "Badge?"

"I don't have one. I was just hired last night. I uh... have paperwork. Would that help?" I set my backpack down, and was about to go digging through it, when Jules arrived wearing sunglasses and carrying the biggest coffee I'd ever seen.

"She works here Bert! She's our new Azure Queen!"

"Well she needs a badge." said Bert as he unlocked the chains around the gate, with a huge wad of keys.

It took him a good minute to get the chains off, then he let us in. Once we were inside, he immediately chained the gate back up. I started to follow Jules, but he stopped and turned around to face me, "Why don't you go with Bert here and make a security badge, then meet me back in the dungeon."

"Okay." I said.

"You know the way?" Jules asked, lowering his sunglasses. For a moment I caught sight of his brown eyes. His pupils were massive!

"I think so." I said, trying not to stare. "I have a map."

"Well if you get lost, just follow the music dear," said Jules, with a big smile. He lowered his sunglasses then he turned to Bert. "Morning Bertie!"

Bert sighed but nodded back. Jules turned around and went off to the right while Bert went to the left. I followed Bert and he took me to a building I hadn't noticed yesterday. It was behind the ticket booth and before you got to the entrance tunnel, about ten or so steps back. It looked like a brick wall, but I could just make out a door. It had security written on it in small black letters. I assumed they wanted to keep it hidden.

When we got inside I could smell coffee brewing and saw several gray desks. Off to the side, I notice a small hall lined with what looked like jail cells. I suppose this is where they put people until the police arrived. One of the walls in the room had various pictures and posters of people who had been banned, and for how long. I glanced at it before I noticed another wall with a dozen or so monitors, showing various vantage points of the park.

Bert walked up to the monitors and took a good look at them for a minute or so before he poured himself some coffee. He took a sip, then set it down on a desk and stared at me for a moment. He let out another sigh then pointed to one of the bare walls in the room. He told me to stand with my back against it and I did.

He pulled a camera from a filing cabinets and took my picture twice. He asked how I spelled my name and wrote on each picture. Then he put one picture in a binder with other employees and laminated the other. He added a lanyard to the laminated one, making it into a badge. As he was handing it to me, he turned to the monitors and I saw a car was just pulling into the parking lot. He furrowed his brow then turned his attention back to me.

"Keep your badge on you at all times."

"Even when I'm in character?" I asked.

"Especially," he said, "We get all sorts here that like to dress up, and this lets us know your an employee and not a guest."

"Okay," I said.

He looked at the monitors once more, then went to the door and waited for me. I followed him outside and saw another person was at the gate, waiting to be let in. I started to walk off, but realized I hadn't thanked him.

I turned around, then said, "Oh, uh thank you, Bert!"

He waved acknowledging he'd heard me, but was clearly focused on the person who wanted in. I looked down at my badge for a moment, it wasn't my best picture but not my worst either. I noticed he'd put my name at the top, and my character's name at the bottom. I smiled running my hands over it. Somehow it made things feel all the more legit. I really worked here! I put the lanyard around my neck, then turned and went in the direction Jules had gone.

I found a door that took me into the back area. From there I pulled my map out, and made my way to the costume department. It was still a bit tricky to find. When I started to hear music I knew I was headed in the right direction. I found the never ending hallway with the yellow clothing racks on one side, and soon pushed through the double doors. Jules was dancing around the room. I had no idea how anyone could be this energetic first thing in the morning. It must have been that huge coffee he'd been carrying.

He noticed me and smiled."Ah there you are!" He slid up to me, then pointed to my new dress."Well, what do you think?"

I couldn't believe he'd made it in less than a day. Yesterday it had only been a drawing and some fabric pinned together, now it was a full on dress. It had two layers in different colors. The under layer was a light blue and the over layer was an azure blue. It had long sleeves that draped at the elbows and another false corset, I assumed. I also saw several blue jewels sewn on and fabric flowers...not just any flowers at that but blue roses! He'd remembered they were my favorite. I'd seen them in a dream once, and had adored them ever since. How had he done all this in such a short time!

"Oh wow," I gasped, not taking my eyes off the dress. "You truly out did yourself!"

' "Thank you. Thank You." he said, taking a bow. He turned off the music then took off his sunglasses and set them on a nearby. He turned to another table as he said "I also made this."He picked up some fabric and unfolded it. I saw it was a navy blue velvet cloak.

"I swear how did you have the time to make all this and sleep."

"That's the secret, my dear. I don't sleep!"

"Seriously!"

He chuckled and I wasn't sure if he was joking or not. "Alright, now when you're out and about on your everyday queenly business, you'll wear the cloak and the dress. When you're doing any big events, you'll wear the ballgown. That should be enough outfits to last you a lifetime."

"Okay." I said. We stepped up to the dress and he wrapped the cloak around it, to show how well they paired. I ran my hands over one of the long sleeves and wondered what fabric this was. I assumed it was like any work uniform you got. You'd take it home with you and have to wash it yourself. How did you wash something like this? "Uh? What are the washing instructions?"

"Washing instructions." Jules snorted. "Oh no honey, you don't wash this, professionals do! We have a special company we go through. Also under no circumstances do costumes and props ever leave the grounds! It's like the one major no, no around here"

"Okay." I said, "So I just change into my costume when I get here and change out before I leave,"

"Yes," said Jules.

"Where does all my stuff go while I'm working?"

"Craig should set you up with a locker for your backpack. Your clothes will just go in a cubby, in the women's dressing room. Your costume should have a specific place on the dressing room rack. As for washing, have you noticed the yellow clothing racks just outside in the hall?"

"Yes."

"Laundry pick up is on Monday nights. So after your shift Monday or the last one you have before Monday, put any costumes that need washing on a yellow rack. Someone will put it back in the dressing room, when its done."

"Alright seems simple enough."

"You'd think, but people forget all the time. If you ever do or you're missing something, just contact Grace, she's the laundry coordinator. Now why don't you put the new dress on, while I get you a bin for your clothes. You can wear the same undergarments as before, they work for both dresses. They should still be where you left them last night, behind the curtain."

"Okay." I said.

He handed me the cloak and dress and I took it behind the curtain I'd used last night. I got undressed and slid on the nightgown with relative ease. The corset was another matter. I stood there for a good minute uncertain of how to put it on. I hadn't really paid attention last night with everything going on. I heard some footsteps and thought Jules had returned. I suppose I could try to get it on myself and if I needed help, I could always ask. I began unlacing it as I heard another set of footsteps. I wondered if Berry had come in.

"Oh hey!" said Jules. "How are you?" There was no response, a few seconds later Jules sounded concerned, "Hey? Hello? Are you okay?"

I wondered if Berry's date hadn't gone well. "Hmm, yeah sorry."a man responded. I realized it wasn't Berry.

"You okay, you look like you've seen a ghost?" said Jules.

"I don't-I- This- Have-" The man kept cutting off. It sounded like he was struggling to speak.

"What is it?" asked Jules. He sounded worried.

"Do you believe in love at first sight?"asked the man. I paused, finding his question rather unexpected.

"Why thank you!" teased Jules. "I'm flattered, but sadly I'm taken."

"I'm serious." said the man.

"Okay! Okay! Do I believe in love at first sight? Well, I don't know about love, but lust at first sight, yes! You've seen Jason. I saw him and had to have him! Why are you asking? You just see someone and fall in love?"

"No I just-" The man cut off.

"Just what?" asked Jules.

"Forget it." groaned the man.

I hoped they wouldn't! I bit my lip knowing it was bad to eavesdrop, but who was I kidding, at this point they had my full attention!

"I think this could use a touch up," said the man.

"Oh yes! Piece of junk!" Hissed Jules. "I swear I'm always spray painting this thing, every other week. Thanks for bringing it to me."

"No problem." said the man.

"So how was it?" asked Jules

"It went well." said the man.

"Oh good, good," said Jules.

"How is Jason?"

"Leg's still broken." Sighed Jules. "Doctor thinks he might need another surgery. Thank you again for helping out, on such short notice. I don't think there is anyone else that can managed Ryder beside, you and Gilbert."

"It's no problem, I've know him since he was a foal."

"Tell me, did he have attitude back then as well?"

"If anything it's gotten better," the man chuckled.

"Of course, the pretty ones are always trouble," chuckled Jules.

"Right," said the man.

"Are you talking about horses?" I asked, without thinking.

"Who's that!?" asked the man.

"Oh that's the new Azure Queen. How is it going in there sweetie? Sorry, I forgot is it Mindy or Mandy?"

"Mindy!" I called back then admitted "I'm having some issues with the corset." I had unlaced it, then started doing it up as I was listening to them and now it was just a mess of strings.

"Want some help?"

"Please," I said popping out from behind the curtain. I thought it would be okay, since the slip was like a nightgown that went to my ankles.

I handed Jules the corset and he shook his head, "Oh my, what have we done here."

"Sorry, I was trying to get it undone so I could put it on."

"Oh no." said Jules as he started fixing the strings. "This one unhooks in the front, once it's set. Let me show you." He helped me put the corset on then tightened it again, thankfully it was not at tight as before. "Okay now that it's on, and set, you just go to the front here, squeeze the fabric together and unhook," He unhooked the top and I realized how it work. I was able to unhook the rest on my own. I realized it was kind of like a vest.

"Sorry for the mix up. I didn't know." I said feeling silly.

"Well now you do. Now to put it back on, you just wrap it around yourself." I wrapped it back around myself as he continue, "I find it's best to do the top hook first, then work your way from the bottom, up. It also helps to suck in and hold your breath." I followed his instructions and got it."There you go! You got it!'

"Thank you," I said, then glanced at the guy Jules had been talking to.

He was standing off to the side, not quite looking at us. He was tall and lean, with golden hair tied back in a small ponytail. He had on thick round glasses and wore a light jacket over a white button-up shirt that was tucked into the waste of his tan pants.

I don't know what caught my eye about him, perhaps it was his body language. He looked rather stiff, uncomfortably so, his lips were pursed and his hands were clenched. I don't know why, but the hairs on the back of my neck stood up, and I wondered if I'd upset him somehow. I had interrupted their conversation and I knew some people didn't like being interrupted.

"Is everything alright dear?" Jules called.

I realized I'd taken more then a glance and was full on staring at the man. I blushed embarrassed I'd let my curiosity get the better of me. I turned to Jules and quickly said. "Oh yes, sorry. I should be able to get the rest on my own."

"Okay, but let me know if you need any help." said Jules.

"I will," I said.

I darted back behind the curtain and let out a heavy sigh, shaking my head. I honestly didn't have time to be a total space-case right now. I picked up the dress and pulled the layers apart. I got on the first layer in less then a minute, but the second later was a bit more tricky. It had to sit just so and took some adjusting. Once I had it in place, there were all these buttons, ties, snaps and hooks to do. It was like Jules hadn't been able to decide on which he wanted. I thought I got them all and stepped back out.

Jules was looking at a shelf that had various paint cans and sprays on it. The man...hadn't moved at all. I had to have been back there a good ten minutes or so, but it was like he was a statue or something. Okay? I tried not to stare and turned away from him.

"Well," I called out to Jules, "What do you think?"

"Oh lovely, lovely." said Jules, turning to me. "How was it? Did you have any issues getting it on?"

"The second layer took some adjusting, but otherwise it fits like a glove."

Jules walked around me and nodded, "Very nice, let me just tie this here."

I realized I'd missed one of the ties. Once he fixed it, I walked up to the three way mirror and spun about, checking myself out. I did a quick curtsy to my reflection, and as I came up, I noticed the man looking at me in the mirror. Yet when I turned around his back was to me. There was something odd about him. I furrowed my brow wondering just what it was, when Jules asked.

"How does it feel? Can you move around well?

"Oh yes." I said, realizing I was staring at the man again. I moved around some more twisting and turning before I continued. "Fairly well."

"Fantastic!" said Jules. "Now when it comes to the bathroom, you'll want to go before your shift, if you can. Trust me on this."

"Oh." I said. I hadn't even thought about that. "Thanks for the heads up."

"Just years of experience." said Jules. "Now walk around a bit. I need to check the length some more."

"Okay." I said. "Do you want me to glide?"

"But of course my dear, you are a queen and don't forget head up."

"Oh right!" I said. I lifted my head up as I glided across the room.

I felt a bit silly doing this with the man here, but I suppose I needed to get used to having an audience. He also didn't seem all that interested in what we were doing. If anything he seemed agitated. He probably wanted me to go so he could continue his conversation with Jules.

"Very nice, okay, now go change into the other one." said Jules. He handed me the ball gown on a hanger.

"Alright," I said,

I went back behind the curtain and hung the ballgown up. I stared at it for a moment and it was still so beautiful. I couldn't wait to put it back on, then suddenly I realized I had no idea how to put this on by myself. I popped back out and saw Jules and the man staring at each other. Jules had a big smile on his face and the man looked mad. They weren't speaking and I wondered what was going on. The man noticed me first and turned away.

Jules turned a second later and said, "Yes?"

"Oh uh sorry. I'm not quite sure how to put it on, on my own."

"Ahh I'll walk you through it,"

"Thank you."

We went back behind the curtain and I took off the new dress. He helped me into the ballgown slowly, showing me various tricks and the order things needed to go in. "Oh I wish I had a pen and paper to take notes."

"I'm sure you'll get the hang of it, but I can label the layers with some tap on the inside until you do. That should make things a little easier for you" said Jules

"Oh thank you that would be amazing!"

We finished getting the dress on and I could tell it fit so much better now. Jules really was a wizard with a needle and thread. We stepped out behind the curtain and I did the same things I had with the other dress. It was much more cumbersome, but I spun, turned, twisted and curtsied, in front of the mirror. I didn't see the man looking at me this time when I looked up. However when I started to glide about the room, I noticed he'd turned in my direction, out of the corner of my eye.

I turned without thinking and caught him looking at me. He quickly turned his back to me and I wondered now if he wasn't shy or something. Jules noticed the interaction between us and got a strange smile on his face. He noticed I was looking at him and suddenly checked his watch.

He had it flipped to the inside of his wrist and tapped it. "My does time fly. Alright dear, I think that about does it. You should change back into the new dress, before Craig gets here. He doesn't like to be kept waiting."

"Oh, it's time already?" I asked. It hadn't felt like two hours.

"I know time flies when you're with the Jules. It not quite time, but Craig is always early, in more then one way."

I didn't quite get what he meant by that, but said "Okay. Also if I haven't said it enough today, you really are talented, this dress and the other one are absolutely stunning, Jules."

"Oh please!" said Jules, fanning himself with his hand. "Thank you, but it helps when I've got something to work with. You're quite pretty my dear."

I went red. I didn't get very many complements these days and it had been a while since I felt... pretty. After Brett left I tore every aspect of myself apart, trying to find all the ways I wasn't enough until I came to terms with everything. It wasn't about being enough...sometimes it wasn't anyone fault, it just didn't work out, no matter how much you wanted it to.

"You okay?" asked Jules, titling his head. I realized I'd zoned out.

"Yes sorry."I said, "I just really admire your work. I've honestly never worn anything so wonderful."

"What are you like nineteen?"

"Uh more like twenty-two." I said.

Jules shook his head, "You're still just a baby! Turn thirty, then talk to me. You still have plenty of time to experience the world and wear far better dresses then mine, you'll see."

"I don't think so." I said. "You should be a fashion designer."

"Oh stop or I really will get a big head, and I can barely stay up right these days as is."

I smiled at him, then went back behind the curtain. I started to get undressed, but shot out a second later. The man had turned around, and looked like he was about to say something, but quickly shut his mouth. I looked at him head on, but couldn't make out the color of his eyes, through the glare of his glasses. He quickly stiffened again and turned around. I had upset him!

Jules turned to me and put his hands on his hips. "Did you need something else?"

"Uh no, I just wanted to apologize for interrupting your conversation earlier. I just- one of my favorite parts of coming here as a kid, was getting to see the horses. The last time I came I didn't see any, so I figured they didn't have them anymore."

"Ah yes, well the last owners or the ones before that got rid of them! They didn't want to pay for the upkeep. The new owners brought them back. They also bought up the empty fields behind the park and built new stables and a new jousting arena."

"Oh wow. I had no idea. I didn't see them on the map."

"Yes well the new arena isn't opened yet and the stables aren't open to the public. Have you ever ridden?" asked Jules.

"Only here as a kid," I admitted. I also vaguely recalled my dream last night, but I doubted that counted.

"Well, maybe we can get the writers to give you a scene or two with the horses." said Jules.

"Oh that would be so cool!" I said, "Anyway, I just wanted to say sorry...to both of you."

"Oh you're fine, stop apologizing, a queen does not apologize. Now go and change."

"Alright." I said.

I went back behind the curtain and they started talking again as I got changed.

"Anyway, thank you for bringing me the helmet. I'll get it taken care of." said Jules.

"No problem." said the man, "How many more weeks do you think Jason will be out?"

"Doctor says at least a month, maybe two, he wants the surgery to take this time. But don't worry, I think Gilbert gets back this week and he can take over a few shows. Then maybe get someone temporary."

"You know I have some time." The man said. "I wouldn't mind doing a few more shows." So the man was a character, or filling in for a character? I was eavesdropping again but I couldn't help it!

"Really, you aren't too busy with school and everything?"

"I actually have some free time this semester."

Was the man in college? Did that mean he was around my age? He didn't look around my age? Maybe he taught, but no he looked too young to be a college professor. Maybe he was thirty? Could you be a college professor at thirty? I didn't know. I wasn't good with ages. I thought Joanie's husband was in his mid- twenties maybe even early thirties, when I first met him, but he was only nineteen.

"Well, alright," said Jules, "I'll tell Frances and get this fixed up by this afternoon."

"Alright." said the man. "I'll pick it up later."

There was a moment of silence, then I heard footsteps and assumed the man had gone. When I got out, I found I was right. Jules handed me a bin with my name on it, for my clothes. I put them inside and put my backpack on top. I wondered what I should do next before I could ask Jules handed me a brush and the ribbons from yesterday.

"You should do your hair and then makeup next. Also, don't forget your crown and I picked out these pieces. I think they should go well with everything."

We stepped up to a table and I saw a gem encrusted silver necklace, bracelet and ring. The gems varied from light blue to a deep shade of blue. There were also what looked like white diamonds? Everything sparkled in the light.

"Oh wow are they real?"

Jules let out a laugh, "Uh I only wish!. If they were I'd be long gone by now! No all our jewelry and gems are done through a local glass shop."

I ran my fingers over the pieces. Even though they were fake they still looked real to me. Then again I hadn't had much jewelry. I stepped back then got to work on my hair and makeup. Once I was finished and Jules had approved it, he helped me put on my crown and the necklace. As I was putting on the ring and bracelet, an angry man with a clipboard suddenly burst into the room.

"IS SHE HERE!" he shouted and I flinched.

"Who?" asked Jules crossing his arm.

The man flipped through several pages on his clipboard, then snapped, "YOUR LITTLE LAST MINUTE SURPRISE! MINDY EVERT! LIKE I DON'T ALREADY HAVE ENOUGH ON MY PLATE THIS WEEK! HOW MANY TIMES DO I HAVE TO TELL YOU PEOPLE, WHEN IT COMES TO THE CHARACTERS, I'M THE HIRING MANAGER! I VET THE TALENT! NOT YOU!"

Okaaaaaaaay! I assumed this was Craig. I stood absolutely still, fearing I'd get my head bitten off, if I moved in the slightest.

Jules smiled at Craig, unfazed in the slightest. He put his hands on his hips and snapped,"Calm the fuck down! I didn't hire her, Herb did!"

Wait what!? Both Jules and Berry had asked Herb to hire me. I opened my mouth, but knew better than to say something.

"Right!" Craig snapped.

"Right!" Jules snapped back, "You should be grateful we found a replacement so soon, after your last 'talent' walked off mid-fitting!"

"I would have found someone else!" said Craig, his eyes flickered at me, then back to Jules,"Better!"

Ooo that was an insult! The man hadn't even met me!

"Well if you have a problem, take it up with Herb!"

"I have a problem alright, but I know it's with you. Like you and Berry don't have Herb wrapped around your little finger. Tell me are you blowing him too?"

Oh wow! My eyes lit up.

"Maybe." said Jules. He gave Craig a defiant look and pulled out some lip gloss from his pocket. He slowly put it on his lips, before he continued, "What does it matter to you. We're through."

Oh, okay! Shit was starting to make sense now! They were lovers...well had been. I felt like I'd been unknowing pulled into the middle of something.

"Did you forget it was your night to take Toliver? You were suppose to get ice cream and he waited for hours!"

"So why didn't you take him?"

"I had a date."

"Well I had to work!" Jules said gesturing to me, "The dresses aren't going to make themselves!"

"Right! Like you didn't volunteer to screw me over"

"Unlike you, my world doesn't revolve around you." snapped Jules

"Well then maybe you were up to something else!"Craig stepped up on Jules and was inches from his face. "I swear if you're using again, I'll take you back to court so fast it will make your head spin."

Jules suddenly looked mortified, "NOT HERE! NOT NOW!"

"Fine," said Craig stepping back. "We'll talk about THIS later!"

I uncomfortably swallowed, realizing I'd overhead something I shouldn't have. I thought back to Jules's eyes this morning. His energy level and how he got so much shit done. Maybe even his choice of so many different fasteners on the dress. I tried not to think about it as it was none of my business. I bit my lip and suddenly found the entire room very interesting.

I took a step back, hoping to put some distance between us. Craig snapped his fingers and pointed at me, "You! Come!"

I looked at Jules and he shrugged as Craig stormed off. "NOW EVERT! Or do you not want this job!"

"No I do!" I said. I grabbed my stuff and rushed after him as Jules mouthed 'sorry.'

Craig whisked through the back area and I tried to keep up as my stomach twisted in knots. I wished Jules had given me a heads up that Craig was his ex or that he would have a problem with me being hired on. I bit my lip and hoped I wouldn't get fired out of spite.

I could just picture going home and telling my parents. I could already see the look of disappointment on their faces. My mother would no doubt say, 'Who gets fired on their first day?' I clutched my bin and shook my head. NO! If...If I got fired, I wouldn't tell them until I had another job, that would soften the blow…at least I hoped.

We went upstairs and I did my best to keep quiet. He took me to the locker room and showed me to my assigned locker, number one twenty-three. Then he pointed out the security cameras and said if anything went missing they'd check. If I was caught stealing there would be no questions asked, I'd be fired on the spot and the police would be called. Most places had this rule, I just smiled and nodded.

He checked something off on his clipboard then went to the nearby time clock. I put my backpack in my locker and joined him. He showed me where the time card was and how o clock in. I did and I suppose that was a good sign. I mean if he let me clock in, it meant I wasn't fired...yet.

We stepped into the hall and he showed me where the schedule was posted. It was printed up at the start of every week, and went alphabetically by character name. Any changes or new additions were handwritten in the back. We went to the back and I saw my schedule. I'd work five hours today and three hours tomorrow. Then twelve hours on Saturday and Sunday. I'd never done a twelve hour day before, but I could use the hours.

I noticed a little symbol next to each of the twelves and asked. "What does that symbol mean?"

Craig leaned in and stared at it, "Potential overtime."

"Oh," I said "Wait, I could work more then twelve hours in a day?"

"Yes, sometimes these things go over with fan service." said Craig.

"Fan service?"

"You needn't worry, you're new, no one will be requesting you." Then Craig looked me up and down, before he added, "Anytime soon,"

I knew he was mad at Jules, but did he really have to take it out on me. I just politely smiled and he showed me the break room. He pointed out all the security cameras and warned me about stealing. yet again. They must have had a huge theft problem, at some point or something to keep bringing it up. We walked over to the fridges and he said any food after midnight would be tossed, no exceptions.

Next, we went down to the first floor basement, then walked down a long hall, and turned right. I saw a sign that showed women's dressing rooms were on the left, and men's were on the right. We went into the women's dressing room and it was a very long room.

On one long wall it had a table that went the length of the room. Above the table was one giant mirror. It had to be several wall mirrors combined. It went the length of the table and you could see the entire room. Several women were putting on makeup and doing their hair. The long wall behind us was just one large clothing rack, with dozens, if not hundreds of costumes. On the short wall to my right, there were several curtains for changing. On the short wall to my left, the entire wall was one large cubby, with bins.

Craig stepped up to the clothing rack and put two blue clips on the center bar. "Your costumes will go between these two tags. They are blue and have the initials AQ. Do not put your costumes anywhere else."He turned and moved to the cuby wall "You can put your bin here," he said, pointing to an empty cubby."

He checked several things off on his clipboard as I put my bin away. When I stepped back, he shook his head and looked at me like I was an idiot. He pulled the bin out and handed it to me as he said, "No! The name goes on the outside!"

I realized I'd put it in backwards. "Sorry." I said as I put it in the right way, with my name on the outside. Just then a loud bell rang. I froze, wondering if it was the fire alarm. Yet everyone seemed unfazed.

Craig let out a heavy sigh, then shouted, "OKAY PEOPLE! WE ARE OFFICIALLY OPEN! THAT MEANS OPENERS SHOULD BE IN THEIR STARTING POSITIONS, IZZIE, ANDRIA! LET'S MOVE! MOVE! MOVE!" I watched two women get up from their chairs and rush to the door. Craig stopped one of them, taking the coffee cup from her hand. "There is no coffee in the Renaissance, Izzie!"

"I know. I was going to toss it before I went out."

"There is also no food or drink, in the dressing rooms. Consider this a verbal warning!"

"Oh come on! My kid had the flu. I was up all night!"

"And my kid's teething, do you see me complaining? Now move!"

Izzie rolled her eyes, but rushed off. Craig tossed the coffee cup then turned to me. "Now where were we, ah yes, the bell! When it goes off that means the park is live. We also have a red light, on every major exit, to remind you to 'stay in character.' From the moment the bell goes off until we close, we are the Renaissance themselves. Understand!"

"Oh please!" We turned to see a woman sitting at the end of the dressing room, eating a bag of chips.

Craig glared at her, then said, "Are you deaf Amanda! I just said no eating in the dressing room!"

"And I told you I have low blood sugar, Craig. I need to keep it in check or do you want me to pass out mid-performance?"

"I will not tell you again! Get a doctor's note!" spat Craig. "And since when do chips count for low blood sugar. "

"They are sweet chips." said Amanda, getting up. She had on a silky red robe and looked somewhat familiar. Had I seen her somewhere before?

"Honestly, I'm surprised you're up before noon."Craig eyed her suspiciously. "What are you even doing here this early?"

"Had to change my up hours, unlike you I have a life and a date tonight!"

"I'll have you know I had one last night."

"Right," said Amanda, throwing him a skeptical look.

Craig glared at her, then waved her off, "Well be on your way. I'm training someone."

"Clearly." said Amanda. She gave me a look and shook her head, "You should know, not everyone has a stick up their ass."

"I could fire you for that," spat Craig.

"You could, but you wont." said Amanda. She smiled and Craig turned red. Really red, like he was suddenly embarrassed about something. "Also, they did have coffee in the Renaissance, it just wasn't common."

"That's not what my book says." said Craig.

"Then get another book," said Amanda.

She had this air of confidence. She was so cool! She smiled as she walked past, and I finally realized where I saw her. She was the fire breather in the courtyard, the other day.

"Uh, I saw your performance yesterday," I called out, without thinking, "You were really good!"

"Thanks" she said, "Good luck with Craig. Maybe I'll see you around."

"Yeah," I said. "Good luck with your date."

She left and Craig was salty. "You'd do best not to associate with the likes of her. She doesn't even technically work here. She's an independent contractor. Overrated if you ask me, and she doesn't know anything about the Renaissance. Now let's move on from this." He waved his hand about, like he was clearing the air.

He walked me over to the long table and I found it had drawers, with numbers. He told me number two-oh-three was mine. He opened the draw and showed me where all of my jewelry would go, then pulled out a brush and makeup pallet. He told me nothing leaves the park, nothing, not even a hair tie. He said noticing my braid. I half expected him to point out all the cameras, even in the women's room

"Any questions?"

"Uh yes where do I put my crown?" I asked thinking, it wouldn't fit in the draw with everything.

"Obviously you hang it up with your costume." said Craig. Again he looked at me like an idiot.

He checked his watch then narrowed his eyes at me and asked, "Do you know how to work a video player?"

"Yeah," I said.

"Good, that should save some time," he said, checking things off on his clipboard, "Come now,"

I followed him and we returned to the office area. I recognized it from yesterday as we passed Herb's office. We went into a room that had mental tables and chairs. There was a large TV with a video player and a stack of videos.

"Watch all of these," said Craig. "I'll return before you're done and don't even think about skipping anything. I'll quiz you when I get back.

"Okay," I said as he left.

I let out a heavy sigh then walked up to the TV. So far everything was pretty standard. He showed me the lay of the land and now it was time for the cheesy ordination videos. I swear I had seen enough of them to last a lifetime or two. At least this place trained you, a lot of places would just throw you into the mix and hope you'd catch on.

I put the first video, in then watched them one by one, Rules and Regulations, Sexual Harassment, Theft Prevention, Overtime, etc'. Most of them had probably been filmed before I was born. Halfway through I got to some unique videos. 'Your Character and You,' followed by 'Guest Interactions and How to Recognize and Report Inappropriate Behavior.' At some point Manger Herb popped his head into the room, he was looking for Craig. When he saw it was just me, he nodded and I waved before he took off.

When I got to the last video, I wondered what I should do if Craig didn't come back.

Should I wait or go looking for him? I didn't want to piss him of more. Just as the last video finished, Craig came bursting into the room. He looked like he'd been running and seemed a bit disheveled. His tie was undone and his buttons weren't in the right order...like he'd hastily gotten dressed. I tried to act like I didn't notice. His voice seem calmer...cheerful even.

I expected him to quiz me, but he had me get up and we went to the electronics room, which was just past the dressing rooms. Apparently every employee in Darrow's park wore a radio earpiece. Craig showed me how to put it on and conceal it from being seen by the guests. He showed me how to switch channels and I practiced listening and relaying what I heard. Once he was sure I knew how to send and receive a message. He took me into a quiet room and we practice my lines. He didn't seem pleased, but was definitely less aggitated

As noon drew near we went to the nearest map and he showed me the route I was going to take and how to get there from the back area. Apparently I'd exit through the tavern with a basket and pretend to shop as I said my lines. Once I got to the inn, I'd exit then walk back to my starting point. Then wait a few minutes and do it all over again. There was no timer, but I was suppose to do the show five times in an hour. He would walk the first hour with me and correct me as needed. Just Great!

We got into position and I grabbed a wicker basket that had some blue cloth inside. I lifted the cloth and saw a small book, a fake apple and some fake bread. "There is stuff in here?"

"Of course," said Craig "They're your props. We can't have you taking real merchandise. Use them when you shop."

"Right."

Not only did I have to remember all my lines, but I had to sneak items out of my basket and make my shopping look believable. It was all acting…pretending! I let out a heavy sigh and could feel my stomach boiling. I was getting nervous. I'd never done anything like this before, for the life of me I don't know what I was thinking apply for this job. Of course I hadn't applied for this job specifically, I'd been caught up-

"Time," said Craig. "Go ahead, pretend I'm not here unless I have a correction."

Great more pretending. I could do this! I nodded then reached for the doorknob in front of me. I stepped into the tavern and found it had a few people inside. I wasn't quiet sure who was a character and who was a guest. I was suppose to just walk through. I went out the front door with Craig barely a step behind. A wave of fresh air hit me and the next ten minutes were like a blur.

I casually walked from the tavern down the street. As I went, I talked about who I was, where I'd come from, and how I had never traveled to such a prosperous place. I looked around, but the street was empty save for Craig and me. I knew I had to stay in character, but it felt awkward as I went on about how excited I was for this weekends royal announcement at the castle. Craig made a few sounds here or there, but didn't stop me.

When I got to the courtyard, I spun about with such joy, then made my way to the various stalls. I grabbed my wax apple, from my basket, and pretend I had picked it up from the fruit stall. I smelled it, then pretended to pay for it. I put the apple back in my basket, then walked around the courtyard, admiring the fountain and various street performers.

Then I approached a bread stall. All of it looked so good and smelled even better. I wished I could buy some real bread right now, but pulled some wax bread from my basket. I pretended I got it from the stall. I smelled it, then complemented the baker before I pretended to pay once more. Craig was ever watchful, but said nothing.

I wandered about the courtyard and ran my lines once more, who I was, where I'd come from and how wonderful the Ruby Kingdom was. I talked about this weekends announcement with such excitement, then approached a stall selling second-hand books. Yet again, I pulled from my basket. This time it was the small book. I acted like I'd found it on the table and was overjoyed. I went on about how I loved to read and had not read this one yet. I paid for it, then quickly opened it and pretended to read as I walked down a narrow street.

I walked slowly until I got to my exit point, a staff only door, next to the inn. I acted like I was already engrossed in my book as I turned and opened the door. I went into the back, and just like that my first performance as the Azure Queen was over. I let out a sigh of relief and thought that was the fastest ten minutes of my life! I worried I might have messed up and looked to Craig to see how I did. He didn't look up from his clipboard as we walked back to my starting point.

I was sure he'd give me some notes or insult me, but he didn't. I ran it again and it was just as quick. Once again no one was really out there, save for an occasional character. I was suppose to acknowledge them if our paths crossed, by a slight nod or a wave as I was a queen. They were suppose to bow or curtsy before passing by. If I ran into another royal we bowed to each other.

If a guest asked me a question or wanted a photo, I was to stop what I was doing and take care of them. Then I was suppose to get back to the performance as if nothing had happened. Since no one was around, Craig decided to pretend to be a guest, on my third run. He asked me for directions. I didn't know a lot of places yet, so I told him any guard would know. Craig said it would do, but I should say any guard in the "Ruby Kingdom", like people didn't know where they were. I took the note. He said for anything more advanced, I was to direct them to the wizard's tower.

He let me continue, then on the fourth run he pretended to be another guest, asking to take a photo. I took a fake photo with him, then he asked me several questions. Who was I? Where were my guards? Why did I talk so funny? I tried my best to answer in character. He showed me his wrist watch and asked what I thought. I acted astounded at such a device. He jotted something down on his clipboard, but said nothing.

I finished the run, then went to get into position for the last one. Craig trailed behind and I waited for him. He waved me off after a second, and told me to do this last one on my own. He'd be somewhere in the crowd. It was weird walking back on my own. When it was time to go, I stepped outside and noticed actual guests walking around the park. I looked for Craig, but didn't see him anywhere. I kept going thinking he'd show up at some point.

I went about as I had before and noticed I got several curious looks. It still felt so weird talking to myself out loud. I got to the courtyard and pretended to pick out my apple. Then I slowly wandered about, making my way to the bread stall. Before I could get there, a little girl rushed up to me and hugged me. I froze for a second, then smiled down at her as she looked up at me. She was dressed in a princess costume and had a big smile on her face.

"Why who is this?" I asked as she pulled back.

"Tilly!"

"Well hello Tilly? Are you a princess?"

Tilly nodded and got an even bigger smile on her face. She jumped up and down, then asked "Are you a princess?"

"I am a queen,"

"Oh wow!" she gasped. She pointed at me, then cried out, "LOOK MOMMY, A QUEEN!"

"Let's take a picture," said a woman, who was pushing a stroller with a baby in it. I assumed this was the little girl's mother.

Tilly stood next to me and I put a big smile on my face. Her mother took a few pictures of us, then Tilly saw the fairy floss vendor and was off like a rocket. Her mother grabbed the stroller and rushed after her. I stood there for a moment after they were gone. I realized this was my first guest interaction and what an interaction it was!

Tilly had been so happy to see me. I was pretty much a failure these days….a disappointment. Yet to that little girl just now, I had been a queen. I tried not to let it go to my head, but I found myself smiling more than before as I went on. I also delivered my lines with actual excitement. My character wasn't just happy to be here, but now I was too. It was nice having someone see you as something more, instead of less. I didn't just want to do this job. I wanted to do my best!

I got so caught up for a moment that I missed my exit as I was pretending to read. Thankfully no on was around to see me. I walked back to my exit, rushed inside, and shut the door behind me. I put my back against the door for a second and let out the longest sigh of my life. Then I wondered what I was suppose to do next.

I bit my lip then radioed Craig. I told him I'd finished then waited for his response. After a minute or two, he told me to clock out and be back in position at four. I assumed this was his way of saying I'd do. I threw my head back and let out another heavy sigh, talk about stress. I walked back to the dressing room and changed back into my clothes.

After I put everything away, I realized I'd forgotten to turn in the earpiece. I rushed to the electronics room and turned it in. I clocked out, then I wasn't sure what to do with myself. I only had a few hours before my next shift. I didn't want to go home, then turn around and come right back. I was kind of hungry, but hadn't brought anything. I'd have to remember to pack a lunch or bring something to snack on going forward. Maybe after I started making some money, I could eat at one of the nearby fast food restaurants.

I dug into my pockets and found a few dollars. I spent them on two of the vending machines. I got some chips and a candy bar, then had water in a paper cup. I don't know what it was, but the water in paper cups always tasted amazing. I zoned out for a bit, then clocked in half an hour early to get dressed.

I worried I might have clocked in too early, but I was almost late by the time I got everything on. I also forgot the earpiece halfway to my starting point, so I had to rush back, grab it, sign it out then get into position...only to realize I'd left my basket in the dressing room! I rushed back, got it and returned just in time for my first show. I stepped into the tavern a bit winded, but happy I'd made it.

When I stepped outside two women were standing there. They perked up when they saw me, and I realized they were waiting for me. I swallowed and acted like I didn't notice as I started to walk. They followed and I found my heart racing. My first audience! I tried not to think about it and focused on delivering my lines.

When I got to the courtyard I lost them. Of course, there was so much going on, musicians, dancers, and Amanda. She was juggling sticks that were on fire, and threw her head back, letting out a burst of fire from her mouth into the air. Even I paused to watch before getting back to everything.

I did it just as before and got to the part where I was pretending to read. I found myself a little curious. Up until now, I hadn't really looked at the pages. Now I wondered what this book was about. I saw some text, but realized it was in another language. I got a little distracted trying to figure out which.

A strong breeze suddenly swept through the narrow street, and I looked up from the book. A beautiful black horse was up ahead. I got a little excited, it was the first horse I'd seen in years. I thought it and its rider would just pass me by, but it walked right up to me. I stopped walking, and it lowered its front legs and head. I gasped, realizing it was bowing. I'd seen something like this on TV, but never in person.

I quickly bowed back. Craig hadn't said anything about bowing to horses. When I stood upright again, the horse came up and started sniffing me. It tickled and I laughed. I reached out and dared to pet it. I ran my hand over its face and harness, then through its hair, it was so soft and shinny. I wondered what shampoo they used. It's eyes were gorgeous as it took everything in.

"Why aren't you a friendly horse! I wish I had something to give you, a carrot or an apple."

I knew they liked that. Of course, I'd ask its handler before I ever gave it anything. I knew from a text book in school that horses couldn't throw up, so if they ate something they shouldn't, it would be dire. I petted the horse some more then took a closer look at its rider, and realized I'd made a big mistake.

I covered my mouth with my hand as I looked up at the Dark Knight! He was the one character we were all suppose to react to in a big way, no matter what we were doing. We were suppose to shout, scream, call for the guards or flee. I looked around worried this was some last minute test from Craig, but I didn't see anyone else nearby. Everyone was mostly in the courtyard. I looked back at the Dark Knight, still worried I might be in trouble.

"I'm sorry," I said, "I'm new."

The Dark Knight titled his head down at me. I couldn't see his face through his helmet. He didn't' say anything. We just stared at one another. Another strong breeze swept through the street. It tousled my hair and several of the pages in my book fluttered about. The Dark Knight gently pulled on the horses reigns, and the horse went around me. I just stood there unsure of what to do. It somehow felt wrong to scream now after such a friendly interaction.

The horse slowly walked down the street until it entered the courtyard. I heard screaming and shouting before someone called for the guards. The horse took off as guards gave chase. I suppose it was used to the commotion. Next time I'd do what I was suppose to. For now I just let out a pleasant sigh and headed to my exit point.

Once I was in the back, I took a moment to rearrange the items in my basket. Then I walked to my starting point. I was running a little behind so I stepped out right away. It was just me this time. I looked up and down the street, then started walking as I said my lines.

I made my way to the courtyard and saw Amanda was still performing. I watched her for a moment as she let out a breath of fire, then twirled some flaming batons. It was mesmerizing. I fit it into my show, in character, I acted astounded at such 'magic'. I even applauded with the guests before moving on. I picked out my apple, then walked about the courtyard some more.

A character selling flowers walked up to me, and bowed. I gave her a nod and she gave me a white flower. I think it was a carnation. It was unexpected. I didn't know if I should pretend to pay or if this was a gift? Maybe she was trying to boost flower sales or somethinng. In character I said, "Oh how lovely. How much?"

"Already paid for, by the gentleman."

"Gentleman?" I repeated.

She gave me a wink then walked off without another word. I wasn't sure if she was acting or someone had actually just bought me a flower. I didn't think it could be the latter. It was only my first day. I stared at the flower for a moment then looked around. I didn't see anyone looking at me in particular. I brought the flower up to my face and it smelled nice.

I suppose a guest could have bought one for me. They sometimes gave gifts. I'd watched a training video on it. I wasn't allowed to accept money or anything expensive, but flowers and small gifts were acceptable. I had to report anything that looked over ten dollars and the park would decide if I'd keep it, or they would accept it on my behalf.

I looked around again then down at the flower. It had been a long time since anyone had given me a flower. I closed my eyes and smelled it again, really taking it in this time. I opened my eyes and supposed it wasn't actually for me, but my character. Still I must have been doing something right...unless she really was just acting. I let out a sigh, then moved on to the bread stall. My hands were a bit full with the flower and basket, so I put the flower into my braid, then pretended to pick out the bread.

I did my lines again and noticed several guests were looking at me. They followed me as I moved about the courtyard. As the number rose to five, I raised my voice so everyone could hear me and to drown out my anxious thoughts. When my lines were finished, I went to the book stall. I picked out my book then pretended to read and they were still with me. I heard several guests footsteps up until my exit point. Once I got in the back I had to stop myself from squealing, I was so pumped. I wasn't sure how thick the door was and worried they'd hear me. I knew five people wasn't much, but it was a lot to me!

On my third run there were half a dozen people waiting for me. My breath caught in my throat and my cheeks felt warm as I tried to act like I didn't notice. I looked up and down the street, and saw... the Dark Knight and his horse in the distance. I wasn't sure if I should react, given how far away they were.

I decided to wait until they got closer. I turned my back to them and walked down the street as I said my lines. Before I could get to the courtyard, a child called out to me, "LADY! LADY! THE DARK KNIGHT IS FOLLOWING YOU!"

I stopped walking and turned around. I saw the Dark Knight was much closer now. There were no other characters around. I bit my lip as I noticed the Dark Knight stop his horse and wait.

"See," One of the female guests said to her friend, "I told you he was following her."

Following me? This had to be a test, right? Maybe he wanted to make sure I'd react this time. Alright! Fine! I could do this! I stumbled back and gasped. "What! Who! Oh no, it's the Dark Knight! I've heard of his treachery!"

I let out a scream! I might have gone a bit overboard, but it got the job done. I rushed into a nearby shop and hid. I assumed he'd just move on, or be chased off by the guards. Yet he didn't go anywhere! He pulled the horse up to the shop window and just sat there...waiting. What was I suppose to do now? Were they any guards around?

A good five minutes passed and more people started to gather outside the shop. I heard a few of them whispering. "What's going on? The Dark Knight is following some woman. What! Who is she? I don't know? She must be new."

A few guests came into the shop and the owner got curious. She walked over to me and asked, "Is everything okay?"

"Oh yes," I said, then quickly corrected myself. I was suppose to stay in character. "Oh my no, I've run into the treacherous Dark Knight. What ever shall I do?"

"Go and find a guard. There should be some in the courtyard."

"Oh yes!" I said. I suppose I could make a run for it. I bit my lip then rushed out of the shop. Thankfully the guests made way so I could get down the street. They followed along with the Dark Knight. I could hear the horses hooves amongst the footsteps. It was a lot to have so many people following me. Thankfully I saw some guards and called out, "GUARDS! THE DARK KNIGHT!"

I turned and pointed at the Dark Knight. He quickly backed his horse up and took off as the guards chased him. The guests were still watching me. I let out a sigh of relief. Then said, "That was close. It could have been dangerous, if not for the guards. Thank the Ruby Kingdom." Then I got right back into my script. I spoke of who I was, and what I was doing here, and of this weekends very important announcement. I could see several guests got excited, some of them wanted to take pictures and I posed with them.

After I was done, I picked out my apple then went straight for my bread, knowing I was running behind. I said my lines again, picked out my book and headed to my exit point. Once I was in the back, I let out another sigh of relief. That run had been a wild, but I'd handled it fairly well...at least I hoped. I listened to some chatter in my earpiece, but none of it was directed towards me.

When I stepped out for my fourth show, the Dark Knight was waiting for me, along with twenty or so guests. How! Guests were allowed to call the guards as well, but none of them had. Clearly they wanted a show. Rather then immediately scream and flee, I pretended not to notice him. I planed to wait until another guest pointed him out to me, but no one said anything as I walked down the street saying my lines. The Dark Knight slowly followed behind me. The horse was so close I could hear his breathing.

When I got to the courtyard, I decided to turn around. Before I could shout for the guards, he turned the horse around and took off back down the street. I stood there puzzled. Just what was he up to! I turned back around then went through the rest of my show as usual. The guests followed me the entire time. I heard whispers but couldn't make out what they were talking about.

After I grabbed my book and was pretending to read. I glanced up and noticed the Dark Knight was waiting for me, at my exit point. Honestly, what was he doing? What did he want me to do? I wasn't sure. I acted like I was so into the book that I didn't notice him, and exited like I always did.

When I stepped outside for my last show of the day, there were more people than I could count waiting. Towering over all of them, on his horse, was the Dark Knight. Were we seriously going to do this again? The crowd seemed to hope so. It was weird, but I went about as before.

After delivering a few of my lines, one of the guests called out to me, "Um, Azure Queen!"

"Why yes that is me." I stopped and turned to the guest.

A girl, who looked about my age smiled at me, then nervously asked "What are you doing?"

"Doing? Why I am here from the great Kingdom of Azurite, for this weekends announcement at the castle."

"Yeah... but like, why is the Dark Knight following you?"

"The...Dark...Knight." I said it slowly, with a shocked expression on my face.

I looked at the Dark Knight and let out a scream. I turned to run once more, but only got a few steps before I tripped and fell to the ground. I don't know if it was from a loose cobblestone, my dress or just tripping over my own feet, but I fell hard and everything in my basket spilled out. This was not good! Now everyone would see I already had the items I was suppose to pick out. I scrambled to pick them up. I grabbed the book and the bread, but when I reached for the apple, I found another already grasping it. My hand collided with theirs and I gasped, seeing it was the Dark Knight!

He'd gotten off his horse and had fallen to one knee, to help me pick up my things. I forgot myself for a moment and said, "But you're a villain?"

He spoke to me, his voice deep and booming from the helmet. "Treachery my queen, is in the eye of the beholder. Should you see me as a villain, a villain I shall be, but should you open your heart, then perhaps more you shall see."

None...of...this...was...in...my... script or training for that matter! I froze my mouth ajar. I felt my cheeks grow hot. I didn't quite understand what he was saying. I stared at him and could see his eyes, through holes in his helmet. He had the most captivating eyes I'd ever seen. They were this shade of blue...an ice blue.

I stared at him for a minute or two longer, taking in his words, 'See me as a villain, a villain I shall be, but should you open your heart then more you shall see.' It was quite poetic. The guests were gasping and whispering to one another, about our interaction, then I heard someone call out.

"WHAT IS GOING ON HERE!" A man shouted. He pushed through the crowd and I saw it was a character. "OH MY THE DARK KNIGHT! HERE IN THE CITY! GUARDS! GUARDS!" He rushed off, and I looked back at the Dark Knight. He hadn't taken his eyes off me.

"The guards are coming." I said, knowing he was suppose to book it.

"Let them come." he said, slowly rising up.

He offered me a hand and I took it. He helped me up and we got dangerously close to one another. He pulled me in like he might kiss me, but let go of me. He turned and got on to his horse. His helmet tilted in my direction and he tossed something at me. I reached out just barely catching it. I realized it was my apple. I'd completely forgotten about it.

He nodded to me then took hold of the horses reigns, and gave it the command to take off. The crowd parted as the guards rushed down the street and chased after him. There was silence for a moment then vigorous clapping. The guests must have thought all of this was staged.

My heart thundered in my chest. All of this had been so unexpected. The character that had called the guards, asked if I was okay and I nodded. I was suppose to do my lines still, but what did I honestly say... do after something like that. I was glad it was my last show of the day. I improvised thanking the man, then walked into the courtyard talking about how lucky I was to be in such a safe city. I talked about who I was and where I'd come from. Then finished up with this weekends announcement. I didn't go to any of the stalls, I just moved to my exit point in a bit of a daze.

Once I was in the back and a decent distance from the door. I finally let out a squeal. That had been insane! His words and those eyes of his! They were so beautiful! I smiled thinking about them. I wondered what the rest of him looked like, then I bit my lip thinking everything over. I worried I might be in trouble. It was only my first day and I'd gone way off script, but I was only reacting to my situation. Craig couldn't fault me for that...could he?

I let out another sigh then put my basket back at the starting point for tomorrow. I took out my earpiece and turned it in. I went to the dressing room and there was something at my station! I rushed over to see a blue rose and a piece of paper. I picked up the blue rose thinking it was a fake flower, but quickly found it was real. I gasped, brought it up to my nose, and smelled it before I read the paper aloud.

"Congratulations on your first day."

It wasn't signed, but I assumed it was from Jules or Berry. They were the only ones I'd told about liking blue roses. I couldn't believe they'd gone to the effort of making one, with as busy as they were. Blue roses didn't exist, so they must have taken a white rose and let it sit in some water with blue dye, or maybe there was another trick to it that I didn't know about. Either way, I wanted to thank them for everything.

I quickly changed, clocked out, and grabbed my stuff from my locker. Then I headed to the costume department with both flowers—the one I just got in the dressing room and the one I'd gotten earlier from the flower vendor. Two flowers in one day! I felt so special!

Jules was listening to music and sewing something when I arrived. He turned off the music, when he saw me and asked. "Well, how did your first day go?"

"Great! Really great! Uh did you or Berry leave me a rose and a note, in the dressing room." I asked, wanting to make sure.

"No," said Jules, "I've been trapped in here all day and Berry was a no show. His date either went really good or really bad. Perhaps you have a secret admirer."

"I doubt it," I said looking at the flowers. "It's only my first day."

I bit my lip wondering who else it could be from. I doubted Craig had left it. Maybe it was Amanda? She seemed nice, but I doubted it. Also how did this person know I liked blue roses? Perhaps it had been a coincidence? I smelled the rose again, then supposed they'd given me a blue rose for being the Azure Queen. Jules had put some fake ones on my dress. Maybe a guest liked my performance or maybe it was from the Dark Knight. My chest fluttered at the thought of him, and those ice blue eyes of his.

"Uh, do you know who the Dark Knight is?"

"No," said Jules. "It's suppose to be a secret."

"Oh well, I wont tell anyone. I just figured since you do all the costumes, you might know."

"Well I don't." said Jules, but he had a sly smile on his face. Perhaps he knew, but didn't want to tell me. He went on,"I just leave a costume out for him. Why? Did something happen?" He raised an eyebrow at me.

"No." I said shaking my head, but my cheeks got hot and were no doubt turning red., "No, uh, just curious."

"Right." said Jules. He could probably see right through me.

I smelled the rose once more then admitted. "I just got two flowers today and it's been a while since anyone gave me flowers. Oh-" I said realizing something. "Do you think I can take these home with me, or do I have to leave them here?"

"I wont tell if you don't." Jules said. He winked at me then assured me, "They are just flowers, you should be fine, put them in some water when you get home."

"I will," I said, "Also, thank you for everything. You and Berry both. I really like this job.'

"I'm glad and thank you for making things, interesting."

"Interesting?" I said confused.

He smiled, but didn't elaborate. He turned the music on and went back to sewing. I couldn't help but wonder what he meant by that. I stood there for a moment, then slowly turned and left. I got lost again on my way out, but I managed to figure it out eventually.

I was in a bit of a daze on my way home. When I got inside I filled a tall glass with water, since we didn't have a vase. I put it on my nightstand then put the two flowers in it. The rose looked like it might last a few days, but I wasn't sure about the other flower, given how much I'd carried it around. I stared at them for a moment, then read the note again before I got something quick to eat.

I started some laundry and my dad came home not longer after. He grabbed some left over chicken from the fridge, and hurried into the living room to watch the game. I hung out in my room for a while, then made myself dinner, an egg wrap and a strawberry pudding cup. I watched the game for a while then got ready for bed. I kept thinking over my day and everything with the Dark Knight. I hoped to see him again, and that I wouldn't get in trouble.

I laid awake in bed for a few minutes, looking up at my ceiling. At some point my dad went to bed and I fell asleep. When my mom got home she woke me up, knocking on my door. The only questions she had, was how much did the job pay and when, again I didn't know. I was only half awake, but I knew her look of disapproval by heart. She probably thought I was stupid for not knowing, but I was just happy to have a job I liked. I didn't let her burst my bubble and went back to sleep, dreaming of tomorrow.
